Dr Parnassus doesn’t really fuck with your head per say, it leaves you in a mysterious state of awe
it doesn’t have a set plot, and all most people can really muster for a summary is “a theatre company gives the audience more than what they were expecting”
it’s very hard to follow because it keeps twisting and turning and once you see a set plot it changes on you quickly afterwords, so you must be at least 6 years old, have a deep past with symbolism and weird trauma, or at least 75% stoned to understand it fully
and it’s different every time you watch it because you have a different perspective of the characters every time, sometimes you see it from Valentina’s or Anton’s, maybe even Dr Parnassus’ or the Devil’s. if you ever see it from Tony’s side though, that not ok and you might need to see a doctor because he was a pedo and an abuser to Valentina
but there’s always the one thing set in stone: someone made a deal with the devil, and a man is trying to trick them both out of it
oh and the visuals are STUNNING for it being a 2009 film
the only thing i don’t like about the movie is that Verne Troyer was in black face for one of the scenes, and you can clearly see the uncomfortableness of everyone in the room, even Troyer, and you can tell it was an executive decision made by the director or a producer and it was awful
i grew up on this movie and it helped me through a lot of the bizarre trauma that my mother and her friends/family put me through. valentina was always relatable because her father (Dr Parnassus) sold her soul to the devil 5,000 years before her birth. it’s a weird trauma for her and she’s getting through it however she could- with toxic men like Tony who promise her “freedom” from her “curse”
