Not on Bucky's Watch

"Where's Bucky?" asked Sam.

"I don't know," I shrugged, helplessly. "We left the house together but he said he needed to take a detour."

The elevator opened and Bucky materialized. Nodding at Sam, he sidled up to me and I could hear a slight rustling as he pulled a small Breads Bakery bag from his jacket.

"I got you some chocolate rugelach. You didn't eat breakfast, doll. It's going to be a long day."

"Awww, Bucky." I gave him a kiss. Sam was shaking his head.

"You two are sickening," he complained, then he smiled at us. "Don't ever stop."

Day 27: Rustling - @thedrabblecollective

This, as well as all of the other drabbles I’ll be doing for this challenge, are meant to be (out of order) parts of a novel I’m working on, so they probably won’t make much sense on their own.

Cedar’s hand seemed almost detached from her mind, rustling in the pocket of her dress and fondling the letter, running its fingers down the rough, faded paper while its counterpart delicately maneuvered a fork around a slice of her birthday cake. She found, absentmindedly, that the dessert was a fluffy angel food cake, with only a whisper of lemon, and half wished that she hadn’t removed the lettering, if only so that she could have something to read. The conversation of Cedar’s family members bounced off her; She now knew of people far more interesting, with words far more captivating.

Liselotte had good control over her fears. She trusted her friends, Engetsu, and herself. But sometimes, doubt came creeping in, insidious and cold.

Engetsu had been gone on secret business since morning, and had yet to come back as the sun set.

Sitting in front of the window, her knees pulled against her chest, she stared at the horizon.

She heard a rustle and Yomi appeared beside her.

"He's gonna come back, you know. I've told him many times he could leave. He should leave. It would be safer for him if he left." A pause. "He always comes back."

Sebastian flicked his lighter, sucking at the end of his cigarette. Once the end lit, he drew in the smoke, letting the ashy taste settle his nerves. When he finally blew it out through his nose, the smoke curled up into the sky.

A rustling sound came from the bush closest to him.

A grey cat crept out of the leaves. It meowed softly, then stepped over and rubbed itself against Sebastian's leg.

He grinned and ran a hand over the cat's back.

He wasn't going to turn down another thing to calm him. Especially one as cute as this...

AN: I'm a day late because I was sucked into starting a new save in Stardew Valley and put off writing these for these for about a week. I figured I'd use one of these drabble prompts to mention these characters.

November 2025 Drabble Challenge

Day 27: Rustling

Fandom: Dragon Age the Veilguard Pairing: f!Rook/Neve Rating: T for this one, overall M, just to be sure Word count: 100 (duh!) Author's note: I'm currently working on a long fic (slow burn) that will tell the story of Asha (my Rook) and Neve. I'm currently working on chapter six and it will be a bit before I'll start posting it. These drabbles are technically happening after that story since it will be snap shots of key moments in their relationship Asha remembers after DAtV (and before the sequel I have ideas for). I don't think there will be any spoilers for the fic ('Rook on the Seventh Rank' will be the title) if you've played the game. I'm not inventing the wheel anew just sharing some new perspective from Asha.

I want to work on these drabbles to help me get to know my Rook better and getting her voice down and sharing some insight into her motivation and reasoning, since the long fic will be mostly (not all of it though) from Neve's PoV. (this author's note is already longer than the drabble LOL)

Author's note 2: Thanks to my wife, who's always supporting me in my writing endeavors and is cheering me on after I ended a IDK five year hiatus? I couldn't do this without you.

Thank you for all the kudos and comments I got on this series so far. After not writing for a really long time this really means so much to me.

Drabble under the cut!

To the untrained eye, the attacker would appear to have been a Crow.

But Asha knew a lot of Crows, and she was friends with a whole bunch of them, so she noticed the little flaws in the armor. She noticed the absence of a house crest, and she noticed the rustling of the clothes in the wind; something that would never happen with real Crow armor. Someone wanted to drive a wedge between them. Someone wanted to sow doubt.

Asha smiled.

Someone was worried. And that meant they were on the right track; they had a chance to succeed.
