“may i ask you something, athelstan?” she looks as dreadful as she feels, body still aching from adamant and the fade thereafter. it’s easier to relax the normally strict posture she exhibits once the majority of skyhold has gone to sleep, the usually busy keep now all but silent. a hand runs through ebony hair and a long sigh follows, “i wanted your opinion about something, about a warden.”

         ❛  You know, I feel like meeting me really was for the best,  ❜   he said lightly, dropping fresh roots into the pot brewing above the fire.  He looked up with a small smile, stirring the contents of the pot in a fluid movement, allowing the lovely scent of the stew to carry itself with the light breeze.  He was sure that none of it would attract unwanted guests   —   and for that little magic trick, he was glad he had experience in traveling long roads.   ❛  I don’t even mean all the additional magic kicks.  I’m just happy to do the cooking.  That dinner was truly. . .   something else.  By which I mean, it was a bloody nightmare.  ❜

a glass of wine, filled far more full than normal etiquette would allow for, is placed aside his hand, its partner resting comfortably within her own grasp. she’s come to appreciate the evenings, when skyhold grows quiet and the flurry of activity ebbs more slowly, even if only for a few hours. it also allows her some semblance of privacy. 

“if anyone asks,” she comes to stand aside him, taking a small sip before leaning against the balcony, “i’m convening with andraste and dutifully reciting the chant of light,” it’s all grown so fast, each stone and brick and newly forged sword within the keep’s walls. there’s a sense of pride deep within her to see it all, even if that pride is perpetually mired with worry. “not getting tipsy and ignoring the letters i should be sending. care to join, athelstan?”

“he’s very sweet, your boy.” she suspects that perhaps this isn’t the sort of thing she should be saying, encroaches on the deeply personal, but she’ll feel remiss if she doesn’t, “i had a talk with him the other day about the flowers in the courtyard. i’m fairly certain he’s much smarter than i am.”

“        wont you sing a song my friend? it is a long night, and i could use your pretty voice.     ”     zevran says this off-handedly,     eyes hooded as if to be unassuming;     lazy and relaxed in his posture.     he does not expect the warden to indulge him,     as tenuous as their relationship is,     but wouldn’t it be nothing short of a blessing to be indulged this once?     zevran turns his gaze upward towards athelstan,     barely holding back the sharp sense of longing.

❝ ——— A warden’s duty is never truly over, yes? ❞ he knows a handful about Grey Wardens / whatever he had found in the books he could get his hands on / though he presumes he knows only a handful more than the general populace, in other words little beyond THEY KILL DARKSPAWN, A HARROWING RESPONSIBILITY, and so on. Nonetheless, he speaks lightly, entirely without brevity, curious for the sake of curiosity and simply speaking his mind / making conversation : as he’s wont to do. It gets him in trouble more often than not ( just ask blackwall, not to mention the overall majority of the inner circle ) but there’s little point in avoiding it, is there? ❝ And here I thought that heroes are meant to receive an idyllic happily ever after. Someone should inform the authors of children’s tales, lest they continue to spread that myth. ❞
