To capture a predator You can't remain the prey You have to become An equal In every way So look in the mirror And tell me, who do you see? Is it still you? Or is it me? Become the beast We don't have to hide Do I terrify you Or do you feel alive?

Taking to the Skies: A Dragon and Rider Story
( @marching-man )
The rough sound of scales rustling on a stone floor intermingled with soft hiss in the early afternoon. Inside a cave in a mountain that overlooked a forest, a dragon was sleeping for the second day in a row after her last hunt. The tip of her tail occasionally tapped the ground as she dreamed of chasing down a herd of elk. It was a pleasant dream, and one she didn’t care to wake up from just yet. However, a slight scent entered her nose and made its way to her mind. It wasn’t the smell of elk, trees, or even herself. It was the scent of a human.
She snorted, smoke coming from her nostrils, and she shifted slightly. The scent hadn’t gone away, and soon enough, her instincts had made her wake up. She hissed in dissatisfaction and opened her eyes, looking towards the mouth of the cave without moving her head. Perhaps the human was just passing by, as some were wont to do. She waited for the scent to pass so she could return to sleeping, but was dismayed to find it was only getting stronger. And then, she heard a voice calling from the entrance of the cave, and it was calling to her.
“Oh great and most noble dragon, I have traveled far to see you! I come with a gift, and ask that you will appear. I wish to bond with you, and bring greatness to us both!”
The dragon grumbled to herself as the words reached her. Of course it was another prospective rider. She wondered how dull this one would be. She was also starting to think that she should have herself listed as a dragon who shouldn’t be disturbed the next time those list makers from the academy came calling. Shifting her weight slowly, she stood up and walked to the entrance. As the light met her eyes, her pupils narrowed, and she looked down at the young man before her. He was bowing as she came out. Well, he at least knew how to show her respect. But beyond that, he didn’t seem much different than the others. It was best to get this over with as soon as possible.
She sniffed the air around him and then raised her head to let out a thin, green flame, watching his reaction closely. He hadn’t leapt out of the way like a coward, but neither did he seem too bored or bold. At least she wouldn’t have to deal with someone who was too stupid for their own good. “Ha, another prospective, little rider from that silly academy down in the big valley? Ever since I became big enough to sit on, I’ve been hounded by one of you at least once every five years. And not one has been good enough to sit on me.” The spines on spines on her back rose up as though to make her point. The shafts were black, with gold tips at the end. Anyone who knew anything about dragons knew that to touch one carelessly would mean a painful death by poison. “So, what makes you think you’re special enough for this? What gift have you brought me? I hope it’s not another sword. I already have three rusting away in my cave.”

Dragon design concepts for our little AU. Lots of (poisonous) spikes and pokey scales. Lud will either have to always have some good leather on, or make like the Princess Bride and develop an immunity to it (though I’m not sure that’s possible XD ).
She’s a fairly slim dragon, and not too big. Lud would probably stand at her shoulder. She might grow a bit more, but not by much. She has a few scars and a bite out of one ear from skirmishes. She likes the forest climate, and occasionally something warmer, though she isn’t well suited for the cold.
Also, I feel like my scanner and color pencils don’t do her green hues justice. :( And sorry the scanner cut off the top pic on the bottom. It didn’t fit my sketch book well. And now we’re moving and my brother’s taking the scanner, so I can’t redo it. *sigh*
