Got any examples for that book not doing pre-modern society right? Otherwise my curiosity might make me read it.

the thing that was really the last straw for me was when a character was stealing supplies to go on the run and she grabbed a bunch of candles, like what use are those going to be on the road??? and the way there was a map at the beginning of the book but then all the directions and places mentioned in it made no sense on that map. and wildly anachronistic ideas of what religion and power looked like in the pre-modern world.

The way Plato's Cave is described with the shadows on the wall makes me think they would have had shadow puppets

yeah i've been mostly trying to avoid thinking about the obvious connections to plato's cave bc the republic post-dates the stuff i'm interested in by a good bit and theatre and the language around it evolves a lot in the late 5th/early 4th centuries, but you're right, it does seem very plausible (at least at first glance) that plato was using comparisons to a known form like shadow puppet theatre. i will have to look more into it!
