WoT s3 album drop at midnight!! No singles which makes me sad, but I wrote up my thoughts on the track list and am curious what you think? Any wishlist items?

AAAAAHHHHH i'm so excited!!! and i love all your thoughts on the track list, they feel like good guesses!

it's so interesting that rand and perrin are getting new themes. but now they join egwene, nynaeve, and mat in having a theme that is named after the character; maybe the s1 "dragon reborn" and "goldeneyes" themes may transition into being somewhat more about the overall concept of TDR and wolfbrothers than rand and perrin specifically. though i do absolutely adore the s1 TDR theme so i hope it doesn't get pushed TOO far aside in favor of the new rand theme haha that's always my dilemma, i'm excited for new themes but i still want to continue hearing the existing themes get used a lot!

not sure if you were able to watch the early 3x01 screening on saturday, but the end credits music for that episode was a song with a singer singing - i don't remember at all what the lyrics were, but i wonder if it might be one of the tracks included on this album that lists an additional artist besides lorne balfe.

alas, elayne will have to keep waiting for her individual theme! that's okay with me though, i can imagine the andor theme will be versatile enough to fit moments with her as well as with the Royal House (like how the aes sedai theme keeps getting used for big nynaeve channeling moments instead of her individual character theme, to the point where there's that one particular variation of it that feels like it's Nynaeve's Theme TM even though it also applies to aes sedai more broadly).

wild thought, could "the maiden in the dream" be about lanfear creeping on rand's dreams and trying to style herself all egwene-like in his randgwene memories?

i wonder if "the hills of tanchico" might end up being an in-world folk song. they've teased that characters will sing in tanchico!

and my biggest question of all, do we think this is solely the Themes album and there will be an additional album released closer to the end of the season with the in-show music, as has happened with prior seasons, or is it only going to be the one album this time and it's a mix of Themes and in-show? i dearly hope for the former!! i want as much officially-released s3 music as possible!

lmao okay so first the softballs

eyes open - to me this is very much giving cassian vibes, "two steps ahead and staying on guard" and of course he's a spy, he's the most observant star war blorbo so lbr he's always keeping his eyes open. but also the entire song is very trauma-related hypervigilance and our kiddos definitely have so much of that. and finally "nobody comes to save you now" of course doesn't apply to jyn but it does apply to all of rogue one since the rebellion didn't get its shit together in the first place enough to get a real, sanctioned mission on scarif. but for jyn, cassian does nothing BUT come to save her.

cowboy like me - TAKES ONE TO KNOW ONE lmao I've written about how this is their song before but it's just giving two messy bitches colliding in the midst of a heist, or a mission in their case, and understanding each other so intimately because they're the same. I mean as captain of the good ship rc diego luna says, they're mirrors. PLUS like okay now you hang from my lips like the gardens of Babylon with your boots beneath my bed forever is the sweetest con??? cowboy like me!rebelcaptain is the happy ending they were given at one point, with a wedding allegedly and definitely a kiss. but I just love the idea of them seeing each other and just knowing, oh shit they're like me.

I bet you think about me - well technically I said I could relate the songs to either cass or jyn as well as rebelcaptain but because you asked for rc specifically... hm. Okay "I was raised on a farm" is very much giving baby jyn with galen and lyra hosting "kitchen table balls" aka trying to keep their happy family together in some semblance of normalcy even on the run. You and I fell like an early spring snow, I mean cassian is almost immediately unhinged about jyn so 😂 and THEN mr superior thinking does feel like a jab at cass during their post-eadu fight, but of course that song only applies in individual lines, not like... the whole idea behind the song. cassian would never laugh at her dreams, but jyn did sort of give him a nearly laugh when he told her "rebellions are built on hope" so... there's stuff there. I consider this one a success.

london boy - I mean if you think jyn didn't get charmed by the dipples and I mean there's a lyric about joe's accent - no fetishizing of diego's accent here, still of course his voice is lovely. in the book jyn was horny enough to immediately start thinking of his conversational tone as being like he was talking to her over dinner and then she went looking to see if he had any proof of a wife in his bag so this is a hell of a stretch but it works 😂

Hi! I just wanted to know- if there is a stab wound and the knife has been taken out, can you "fill" the wound or something so that it can prevent more bleeding? Like if you could recreate the exact shape of whatever caused the wound and plug it in.

Hey there @dragonsoftheeast! Good question! 

The answer is yes. Military medics do this with big wounds all the time. The technique is called packing, and basically, your medic character will stuff as much gauze into the wound as it will fit, and then stuff in more gauze. The idea is to actually put pressure on the surrounding tissue with the wound packing, so that it helps tamponade the bleeding. 

Actually, tampons are great for this purpose, but more typically, roller gauze and more traditional gauze squares are used. 

As I said: the rule is, pack in as much gauze as the wound can fit, then pack in roughly as much again.

I have a character to goes through solitary confinement for a week for a trial. She can move/sleep/eat/drink freely, and there are two candles for her. Is this plausible? Also, what does it look like when someone dies of being put in a stress position? I imagine the major muscles would be atrophied, but what else?

A week ofsolitary like you describe is certainly plausible and survivable. For an adultwith no mental health problems there should be no long term effects once she’sable to socialise with other people again.

 If sheknows when she’ll be released then there may not be any major effects whileshe’s confined (beyond feeling a little low and bored). If she doesn’t know howlong she’ll be in there then a week is long enough for her to get symptoms suchas mild anxiety, depression, head aches and joint ache.

 Let meknow if you want more detail on anything in particular there and if you’re notsure what anxiety or depression look like consult ScriptShrink, she’s got somegreat posts on both.

 Deathfrom a stress position is death from kidney failure. Having never seen avictim’s body myself I feel like there’s a limit to how far I can describethis.

 Theremight be some slight muscle atrophy but unless they’d been starved as well theywouldn’t be sticks. The change in muscle mass might not be noticeableexternally.

 There’dbe pooling of fluid in the extremities: so if they’d been standing the feetwould be very swollen and (if the character is pale enough) purple in colour.There might be ulcers on the skin caused by the swelling. If you look up ‘pedaledema’ you’ll find some examples of what that looks like.

 Theremight be marks from any restraints used, ligature marks. These are more likelywhen metal restraints are used.

 I’m notentirely sure what the external signs of death from kidney failure are. The sources I’m finding aredescribing kidney failure caused by disease, which is something that happensover a longer time period. As a result I’m not sure if any of the otherexternal signs would be visible.

 Internallytheir kidneys, blood, major muscles, heart and possible liver will all showsigns of damage.

 I knowthat sounds pretty vague and hard to detect. That’s because it is and well that’sthe problem. It makes this sort of torture difficult to prosecute even whenthere’s a dead body.

 Withoutcomplaints, eye witnesses, distinctive equipment and other supporting evidencetorturers can claim that victims just……suddenly developed kidney failure and itwas nothing to do with them.

 If yourstory needs evidence of some kind on the body go with pedal edema in someoneyoung and healthy. Because it’s very rare in someone young, healthy and mobile without something external like a stressposition causing it. The swelling itself can sometimes die down after death,but any ulcers would still be visible and difficult to cover up.

Are there any poisonous desert flowers that you know of? If it helps, I'm trying to incorporate it into a magical creature's diet so that they become venomous.

Yes, yes there are! Not exactly flowers in all cases, but there sure are poisonous plants for your creature to feed on. I did list the effects of the poison, though of course, it is entirely up to you what the creatures effects may be, once the plants have been eaten anything’s possible. Plus this only applies to humans (unless stated otherwise.)

There is the coral bean or Erythrina herbacea that produces toxic berries filled with many toxic alkaloids and cyanogenic glycoside. (Among them erysopine, erysovine, coralin, erythric acid, and hypaphorine.)  Which in this case would mean your creature would have to wait out the flowers as berries only form after the bloom.

Effect: diarrhoea and vomiting.

The Arizona lupin would also make a great dish. All lupins are poisonous, however, their taste determines the degree. Sweet ones tend to have less and bitter ones tend to have toxic alkaloids lupinine and sparteine, as well as enzyme inhibitors. This also includes the silvery lupine (Lupinus argenteus.)

Effect: depressed heart and nervous system function, numbness, possibly death because of respiratory failure.

Now this one known to take effect on cattle and other animals, even known to take out horses. It’s called Astragalus ientiginosus or locoweed since they appear out of their mind and then die after some hours. Another name, in this case, freckled milkvetch, be careful with the name locoweed as it covers a whole range of plants all producing the phytoxin swainsonine.

Effect: Differs between animals.

The sacred datura (Datura wrighti) again opens a whole genus (species) of plants for you. It would make an excellent meal for your creature because everything about it is poisonous, even its roots. It contains three alkaloids called scopolamine, hyoscyamine, and atropine.

Effect: dry throat, mouth and eyes, heart beating irregularly, abnormal thirst, hyperthermia, severe delirium, incoherence, visual distortions, bizarre & possibly violent behaviour, memory loss, coma, often death.

Furthermore, there is the desert tomato (Lycium andersonii) which is quite harmless for the most part, unless you intend to eat its unripe berries which are toxic.

Effect: The Lycium genus belongs to the nightshade family Solanaceae, and pretty much the whole family here is quite deadly in some form or manner. How exactly differs between the plants, but rest assured - these berries cause bodies or very, very sick and uncomfortable humans.

And then, at last, there’s the desert larkspur (Delphinium parishii), again you got the whole genus at your disposal. Young plants and seeds are toxic. It contains the alkaloid delsoline.

Effect: a tingle or burning mouth or skin, abnormal heart rate, nausea, muscle twitches, paralysis, often death.

I seem to always get a response like this whenever I even hint at the fact that I wish Grant & his gf weren’t so excessive with their PDA. Lol. But okay, here goes.

Dude. I probably like you too. And just for the record, I would never go up to Grant OR La Thoma and tell them they need to break up because I need my fictional couple to be more present in their publicized pictures than each other. That’s rude and uncalled for and what right have I to do that?

All I’m saying is they’re posting some pretty cute pics and I just wish the Flash writers gave us that kind of content on the show for westallen. Am I directing my annoyance at La Thoma instead of the writers? A little bit. Bottom line though is that I am happy that Grant found someone that makes him happy. I saw a bunch of your Wheel of Time soundtrack analyses and some of the mysteries there so if you've actually answered these since then feel free to ignore-

Darkness and Shadows- based on the lyrics I think this is a general "fight the Shadow" theme, because its its opening notes play, when Moiraine shows up in her blue outfit in the Foregate, it appears in Min’s conversation with Ishamael, and when Alanna confronts Lan about being a Darkfriend. I think it might also be in Verin's attack against the Fade but the sound effects really drowned it out

Last Light- the only time this appears in the show is in Ishamael's and Lanfear's convo in the Dreamworld, where she's pretending to be Rand

Coming Home- the Damodred theme is in there! It's the backing plucked strings at about 1:32 on the album track. This took me forever. I'm not sure but I think we can hear it in Alanna's scene with her family so maybe it's just about Aes Sedai at home in general

The theme where Lanfear gets unsealed- not on the album, but it's also used when Ishamael is sealed, and as a cue when they pan over those old skyscrapers, so maybe it's an AoL theme and we'll see

Anyway, really looking forward to those s3 albums! We need a s1 drop with 4 albums please Lorne

ooh good catch that the lanfear & ishy sealing theme also appears in the old skyscrapers shot. i would love if we got this expanded into a proper AOL theme for the s3 soundtrack! with us seeing more of the AOL in the glass columns, it would be a good time to formalize its musical theme.

same i'm soooooo excited for the s3 albums!! every season i anticipate the soundtrack almost as highly as the actual season haha yeah i would LOVE to get the 4-album model that s1 had again! although maybe s1 will remain an outlier with the largest OST since it was the first time establishing all the music of the show, whereas subsequent seasons reuse a lot of the established music and have less new tracks to release. still, there were so many little in-show snippets in s2 that weren't on the OST anywhere and i was very sad about it, so i'd love for s3 to have a more comprehensive OST! fingers crossed!
