Studying “Drawing scenery” by Jack Hamm.

- Rectangle frames with different proportions, portrait/landscapes views.

- Commanding the observer’s attention.

- Focal points.

- Focal areas (several items).

- Stealing attention from focal area by drawing additional focal point in it (so focal point dominates focal area).

Obviously, I’m too bad with landscapes, one of my weaknesses.

Probably, it’s because I practice it not too much.

Probably, it’s because I just don’t get it. Figures - gesture + construction. Still lifes - construction. Landscapes - ...?

Anyway, some book needed. And this book is “Drawing Scenery: Landscapes and Seascapes” by Jack Hamm. Can’t say that it’s the best of the best, it’s just the only one I could find on this topic, so in this sense - yeah, it’s the best.

I’ve already briefly previewed it, and it’s really great. It covers scenery drawing from the very very basics (like the pic above - choosing type of frame) and up to a specific stuff like approaches to draw clouds/waterfalls.

And it’s not written in a “for dummies” style, like “drawing trees is fun, so let’s draw them!” It’s a real teaching book. Like Norling, Villpu, Hampton, but only about scenery.

So, my very best recommendations.
