I wanted to use a mixture of mediums when producing this zine and decide to draw some contents using paint pens and used my previous drawings as reference to put on the zine. I also used the technique of experimental multi media scanned pieces to create a cover for some of the pages. However I think that I should have broaden the mediums more and extend from using paint pens for  the drawings as they are too similar. The content is not interesting due to the lack of variety and I should try using different materials to vary each page. The drawings are quiet minimalist there I should try using different visual personality for each page to and try different approaches and methods to make the zine more interesting. The zine lacks strong narrative and needs to communicate its ideas and visual language clearer.

In this series of experimental multi media pieces I used a collage I created and also pages from the magazine and scanned it in whilst messing with the CYMK. For example black and magenta, black and cyan, and black and yellow to to create a new colour palette which transforms the scanned pages into a new piece. In addition to that I moved the pages about very quickly whilst it was scanning to create the abstract waves and lines that deforms the original pages. This created an interesting effect which morphs the subject and content into a whole new subject. On top of that I drew on some of these newly scanned pages to add highlights and make the colours stand out more from the mostly black and gray backgrounds. The last two pieces I transformed them into small zines that consist of abstract imagery and deconstructs the piece into small segments making it more interesting whilst allowing to be folded out into the full image.

We made collages as a group in a studio activity day and experimented with composition by recomposing various cutouts to produce different collage pieces. Furthermore our collages were projected onto the wall where we took turns to draw on while the others constantly added and recomposed the collage. This experimental approach allowed me to stray from the habit of line drawings and informed of structuring collages and how it can be recomposed to create a new piece.

In my series of collage I experiment with using photocopies of the magazine we were given combining them with random images I found to create a collage. I mostly used the Birth of Christianity Art pages to create religious art inspired collages. I structured the hierarchy and composition of the pieces by putting a figure in the centre which is inspired by the structure of Christian art. The figures in the centre are religious figures in Christianity conveying its aesthetic language of looking like a religious symbolic art. Most of the paper cutouts used in the collage are black and white because I wanted to make it seem old and it allows me to add colour using a different medium to add highlights and emphasise certain subjects.

In this series of experimental maximum line drawings I was inspired by the act of drawing on impulse and instinct whilst listening to my friends playing live music. A lot of the imagery are abstract lines that are distorted and are drawn in time to the music I was hearing. The consistent theme of squiggly lines is meant to convey sound vibrations. A lot of the pieces lack structure and are all over the place creating an overwhelming sense of mood to the visual language. To improve I could have used different materials and mediums but at the time of drawing I could only use what was available to me due to the limited time slot I had to listen to my friend’s live music jam.

From the magazine the topic of hearing is mentioned and it inspired me a variety of ideas such as using the deity Kokopelli who is a humpback flute player as a character within my drawings. Known as a god of fertility I had the idea of him being Jesus’ father as a satire idea of the person who impregnated the Virgin Mary linking the theme of Christian Art.  In addition, the topic of hearing inspired me to try a new method and approach to drawing which is to draw from instinct and compulsive mark making induced by listening to live music. Therefore I will attend my friends’ jams and listen to them play which will inspire me to make art that interacts with hearing.

For the black and white drawings I used a range of mediums such as pencil, graphite stick, fineliner, white colour pencil on black paper, ink and tipex. Inspired by the topic hearing and developing my idea of drawing Kokopelli I presented him as a mysterious figure by using expressive lines combined with psychedelic structure by making the pieces busy and seem as if his music puts people to sleep. I then progressed with the idea of combining the two topics of Hearing and Christianity by creating a story that Kokopelli was Virgin Mary’s lover and the farther of Jesus. This idea allows me to have a sense of narrative and structure to my ideas allowing me to develop my drawings further if it is supported by an idea with depth and purpose to convey.

For the block colour drawings I wanted to experiment with the contrast of the vibrant colours from the opaque acrylic pens as they stand out on black paper. For the minimum line drawings I used a mixture of media such as pastel pencils, colouring pencils, chalk and acrylic paint pen to broaden my materials and approach. For the content I played around with the idea of Christian symbolism but in addition to the other topics from the magazine I had. I drew Kokopelli who is a deity who is a humpback flute player as I was inspired the topic of hearing on the magazine. I was also given the topic of tapeworms in cows and drew anatomical drawing of it. I mostly drew abstract forms of these topics and sometimes combined them to experiment and to create new drawings.
