DREAM TEAM BOOTCAMP
Students that were chosen to be on the Dream Team at Shabazz High had to partake in a mandatory BOOT CAMP Training. They did not know what to expect, and this element of surprise exists to date.
Kelly and Franchesca is excited for the days events!
Students showed up to our Future Shop and was greeted by loving hugs and positive energy from my team. We then went down to the gymnasium where the group was split into two teams. The first order of business for each team was to put together a jigsaw puzzle as a team in 20 minutes.
This mission was filled with essential ingredients for the newly formed team.Coming together for a single mission to create the bigger picture using individual pieces. I am seen below speaking with one of my Dreamers explaining the process. He did not get it while he was in the process. I made him step back and take a look at what was going on in the group dynamic. He enjoyed my philosophy and went back into his group to contribute what he could.
Shortly after doing the jigsaw assignment, we dove into a quick game of dodge ball to get the energy flowing. I split the puzzle teams up and now they are against each other throwing balls at high speeds.
Shortly after gym time, I took the gang upstairs into their very own space. The Future Shop!
We covered intros and learned a lot about one another. The goal of this boot camp training was designed to address the purpose of the Dream Team and the power they have to transform their school and city. As an educator, I love to use story telling, analogies, and real life skill training to make a simple point. One of the big takeaways from boot camp was all about targeting and positioning.
Preparation meets opportunity...
We then tapped into the discomfort of showing love to people. We explored handshakes, eye contact, personal self disclosure and close spaces in a cool speed dating "elevator pitch" kind of way.
After getting more acquainted with each other, we all dove in to declare our dreams and possible projects we could do for the start of the year. I took them into a "imagination" workshop to think about the trajectory of their dreams. As a dream director, I am a GPS for the dreamers. We work together to map out the plan and I see to it that do not get off course.
I then closed the days events with a point Chief Dream Director Sallome shared with Dream Directors..
What could you Achieve, Create, or experience for yourself,School, community and the world? This exercise was really important for us to close out with. The ability to explore the microcosmic and microcosmic processes of a dream was so clutch. If we can create small wins with our selves ,we can find lessons and tactics on how to apply the same process to projects outside of them.
The start to a powerful year was underway! Next stop Dream CON!
The world of DREAMERS in Newark has begun with the FUTURE PROJECT.
The birth of the DREAM TEAM
The Future Project charged each Dream Director with recruiting a team of youth leaders in our schools. Its been about a month and students in school knew about the Future Project and me as the "Dream guy" or "Future Man". I took my time during the month to conduct a listening tour, and see the potential in the students. The application process was opened to the entire school. Many signed up but only a handful was chosen -30!
They were ready for boot camp and DREAMCON!!
