Yuki begins to reassess his very one-sided relationship with Pierre when he finds himself growing closer to his new teammate.
Why we're loving it
Pierre is not the bad guy here, he just has a bad case of main character syndrome and can be careless and hurtful because of it. Nyck sees Yuki, is kind and considerate and far more emotionally mature. This characterisation of Pierre is quite easy to buy and the author has put a lot of thought into what makes a relationship healthy and balanced. The author leans deeply into Nyck's Indonesian heritage, and chapters set there have a vibrancy that almost leaps off the page.
'The framed picture of Yuki and Pierre together that Lando gifted him now sits on a display case in his living room, alongside his old racing helmets and select trophies from his career, relegated from its previous perch on Yuki’s bedside table. Better enshrined there, like a memory, than sitting too close and intimate next to a bed Pierre’s never actually slept on, like a lie.
Yuki’s sheets now smell of fabric softener and Nyck, and his bedside table is where Nyck puts down his phone, watch, and bracelets each night before they go to sleep. Charles, how would you describe Nyck in one word?
(Laughter and a long pause)
Charles: Hard-worker.
Nyck, what one word would you use to describe Charles?
Nyck: Talented.
Charles, what would you describe as Nyck's biggest strength and weakness?
Charles: This is hard, hey?
(Laughter)
Charles: I would say his seriousness is something good but it can be something bad too... A positive and a negative.
Nyck, what would you say about Charles?
Charles: It's even worse when we are sat this close to one another.
(Laughter)
Nyck: Ok... (long pause). I think one of his strengths is his talent and speed. His weakness...? Ah, I do actually know one! I think he is a bit tempered, so when something goes wrong he can lose his temper a little bit.
Charles: Yeah, yep.
Of the two of you, who do you think is the most superstitious?
Charles: I think you are you!
Nyck: I think you are (Laughs). It's not that I am superstitious, but I do have certain routines. So probably it would be for me.
Charles: YES! Definitely you (Laughs).
Who has the most followers on Twitter?
Charles: How many do you have?
Nyck: I really don't know...

Charles, if you were to invite Nyck over for dinner, what would you cook for him?
Charles: Well there's not much choice (Laughs)! I can only cook pasta...
Nyck, what would you cook for Charles?
Nyck: Well I can actually cook... but my sister normally cooks at home. She's a really good cook and she likes doing it so I would smile at my sister and motivate her to prepare a good dinner.
Charles, where do you see Nyck in 20 years' time?
Charles: I hope for him Formula 1, but I guess in 20 years' time he will have retired.
Nyck: Yeah, yeah, yeah...
Charles: How old are you in 20 years' time? 41?
[Nyck confirms 41.]
Charles: I think you will be doing WEC.
Nyck: Well the question is wider than that... it's about family etc...
Charles: Ok, then maybe you will be rich, living with your MILK (Laughs)!
Nyck: F**k off (Laughs)!
Nyck, what do you think Charles will be doing in 20 years' time?
Nyck: Well you will probably retire around the same time. First of all I hope you make it to Formula 1. If you do, I'm not sure if you will have the ambition to do WEC...
Charles: It depends how much I make... if I have enough money I will probably be on the sofa somewhere (Laughs)!
Nyck: That's what I see for you: living the proper Monegasque life, probably married, I guess two kids already. How old are you in 20 years' time?
Charles: 38.
Nyck: Ok so two kids is possible...
Charles: Yep...
Nyck: I will go with that! I also think he will stop training... and get really big! I mean no offence to your father but... (Laughs) He's a really nice guy.
If your teammate could have a dream date, who would you think they would pick?
Nyck: Have you got a girlfriend?
Charles: Yes.
Nyck: Well Charles' is easy: he's going to say his girlfriend!
Charles: Exactly!
Okay, then pick him a dream date?
Nyck: Ok, I will say Shakira.
Charles: She's a bit old?
Nyck: That's ok though right? I wouldn't refuse (Laughs). I would go for a Dutch girl... She's one of the biggest Victoria's Secret models at the moment: Romee Strijd. Come on, don't pretend you don't know who she is...
Charles: You're right!
Nyck: I do follow her, I have to admit. She's even younger than me! She's like 19...
Charles: Younger than you?
Nyck: But she's been with her boyfriend for like five or six years already, who's the brother of her best friend!
If you two were doing a triathlon, who do you think would win?
Charles: I think on the run definitely you...
Nyck: I can swim but I don't really know. We haven't really trained together so I don't really know. We will know at the end of the year! If we were informed there would be a triathlon at the end of the season, then I would feel confident. He's really strict with the gym...
Charles: I have to say I am...but he's the best I have ever seen.
Nyck: Thank you.
Describe your teammates dress sense in one word?
Charles: He's more as less the same as he is now (ART GP team gear)- quite sporty looking!
Nyck: In normal life, not really. But on track I like to be sporty.
Nyck, how would you describe Charles' dress sense?
Nyck: Fashionable in a way. Everyone has their own style. He has his own touch in it.
Who has the best taste in music?
Charles: I think my kind of music... Well actually what do you like? You like more disco songs?
Nyck: Well it depends actually...
Charles: Like remixes?
Nyck: Like house and stuff? There was a time I only listened to music like that. I listen to everything really.
Charles: I don't think our taste is completely different...
Nyck: I think you're right.
