Are you a writer, student, or do you often find yourself at work writing important documents? In that case I highly encourage you to use Dropbox, the free (or paid) online cloud storage.
Let's say for instance that you do your creative writing in three places: on your home computer, on your smartphone/tablet, and on a second computer (for instance work or school). I think everyone, especially writers, have that old fear of your computer breaking, or your hard drive being ruined, or losing your disk and losing all your writing.
Dropbox allows you to install it on your computer, or several computers and your smartphone/tablet. So, let's say you're working on a book or a term paper. You've downloaded the free Dropbox app and its on your computer. All you do is just save your document and then drag it over to your Dropbox shortcut. You can create custom folders just like you might on your desktop. So you could save photos in one, or your book by itself, or notes in another.
Sounds simple enough right? Well hold on, there's more. As creative writers, sometimes we get ideas at random times. Sometimes you feel like, "oh crap, I have to write this down right now before I forget." Now, you could write a handwritten note, or if you have a smartphone you could use one of several apps to save your idea.
But with Dropbox the possibilities are greater. You access your Dropbox on your smartphone/tablet or office computer and write down your idea. If you want to save a note in it, great, it'll be there in its folder that you can read back on your home computer without having to grab your phone. Or, you could access the document of the story/book your working on and write the idea in there and go ahead and take a couple minutes to expand on it. Dropbox will automatically update it and when you get home, after you've probably forgotten what your good idea was, it'll be there ready for you.
You get 2 GB free for signing up with the option to purchase more. Or you can earn more by suggesting it your friends and having them sign up through your link. Each person you successfully refer earns 500 MB of free storage and you can earn up to 16 GB... which is a TON if your primarily talking about documents.
But Wait There's More Smartphone Users
A relatively new feature of Dropbox can yield more storage and most likely solve some of your photo taking anxiety. If you're anything like me, you tend to take a lot of pictures with your iPhone, which then squeezes the space you have on your phone for apps and music. At one point I had 700 pictures on my phone. I would go through and delete ones I truly didn't want... but was scared to get rid of the rest, even with Apple's iCloud situation.
But with Camera Upload you can save all your pictures on your phone and earn more space for Dropbox. Here's what you do, get the app on your phone and then enable the Camera Upload feature. As soon as you upload one photo, you get 500 MB more storage. So, for example, if you're on the free plan you would now have 2.5 GB of space. Ah, but a couple hundred photos will fill up 500 MB pretty quick, right? Yes...
But if you keep the Camera Upload feature on, as soon as that 500 MB is filled with photos, Dropbox gives you ANOTHER 500 MB. Every 500 MB of photos you upload via the Camera Upload feature bumps you up another 500 MB. You can do this a total of 6 times, meaning you would have 5 GB of free storage, 3 of which would all be photos. If you have an iPhone 4s for instance this would be about 800 photos stored free in the cloud. And the viewing interface for the photos is really nice, looks just like the photo stream that is native to the phone.
Other Features
So, we know Dropbox can save your documents or your pictures (it can save pictures from your computer as well as your phone). But why else is it a must have tool for writers... or anyone?
The ability to share. Share and collaborate with authors you might be working on a joint project with.
