He is all those things while also being sharp as a whip and lethal as hell too. He could EASILY become a problem. EASILY.

People are all hurr hurr hurr Izaya would be a huge problem to society if he found someone he loved and sought to make them love him. Shinra is so dangerous when it comes to his love for Celty and would willingly destroy the world for her. Mikado this, Anri that, Mika Harima, etc. But can we talk about Shizuo? Shizuo is if stuck in time was a person. Luckily he is a very mild mannered, generally good natured person, but the way that man's mind works could be used for some DIABOLICAL shit.

Anyway LMAO I love this prompt. I couldn't stop thinking about AI for this, so I'm sorry if that's not really a vibe.

Starting with the obvious:

Honestly I think as far as like big plot changes in drrr, I think if it were written today there would be a lot more emphasis on what was going on online throughout the whole thing. You see what goes on in the chat room in the og, but it would be less of like a commentary and overall allusion to the real world and more direct actions being shown and done online. For example, we might see more of how being online has an adverse effect on the generally psychologically unwell characters.

Mikado would have an AI bot that he was speaking to on the regular, validating his delusions and pretending to have an inkling of what's going on in Ikebukuro.

Dollars members would hold livestreams on YouTube and Twitch (maybe even have livestreams directly from the Dollars website?). People would go live whenever they felt they were going to be attacked by one of the street gangs or whatever. Kyohei's gang would use them as guides to help track down the person and save them.

There would be some sort of AI-bot themed street gang in Ikebukuro- probably run by Shijima or someone similar to his ilk. Aoba or Kuon are also good candidates for this.

I think Izaya would probably be intrigued by AI at first, but then quickly grow bored of its uses because he realizes that it just parrots back what he wants to hear- he would, however, enjoy seeing how it exploits others- especially in cases like Mikado. I think part of him would also be jealous because people can get caught up in their own horrid cycle of being enabled by AI and not even need to be manipulated by him anymore! Lmao.

Shizuo would be exactly the same. I can't imagine the poor bastard getting a smart phone but it would eventually get to the point where he would have to. As a result, mans would likely very seldom be on his phone because tis not a matter of IF he'll break it- only when.

Anri would also be exactly the same- completely stuck in the era she was made from. Mika would feature her in videos sometimes. You can also assume Seiji is in her content as well.

Erika AND Walker would have a whole bit where they have AI chat bots that roleplay their favorite characters, much to the disgust of Kyohei who actively pretends like he doesn't see Saburo getting wrapped up by something similar in the Ruri fandom until they all get icked out by the bot doing something too ooc for them to tolerate. Then they would all collectively explode and swear off all AI and hate it with a burning passion.

Celty would have more work than she used to. I can imagine what the evolving era of technology is doing to the Naritaverse side of the supernatural world. She would have what I think is a pretty neutral stance on AI but she refuses to use it because it gives her the creeps and makes her think her information's being stolen. She would absolutely accidentally dox herself as the black rider by being on a live with Shinra though.

Masaomi would be aware of AI but it's manipulative and reminds him of Izaya, so he thinks it's all evil and everyone and everything that uses it is obviously evil.

The Awakusu group would be using streaming and social media to track the movements of street gangs and generally just being in the narrative to be menacing as usual. I like the idea of Akane making Akabayashi do a Tiktok dance with her. I think she'd also make a really cute influencer, but hhhaha I'd be so scared for her.

I think there would still be guns and general violence lol, but I think the gang v gang fights would come sooner. I think the outcome of the story would still be similar- though there's lots of things that I would personally rewrite or take out for pedantic and boring filler pieces in the series. I think the series doesn't utilize its themes around the internet enough, so if it WERE to take place around this time, there'd be all the more reason to do so.

I do!! I think he would definitely be the type to see what another person could do for his partner and frequently feel inadequate because he's so insecure. I don't think he's the type to act like an ass because he's jealous, at least not at first or without awareness that that's what's happening.

I also think he's the type to break things off if he starts thinking too low of himself because of his jealousy. :(((

I LOVE hypothetical.

If I'm honest, I don't think it's fair to Shizuo's character to think he'd be possessive, but I do think he'd be protective. If his love was reciprocated even, maybe he'd be a little needy! Insecure I could definitely see. He's such a fun character because from the Saika Arc, you learn exactly why he's closed that option off from himself and also that he would probably have the purest idea of what love is to begin with.

Shizuo's such a necessary character in drrr because he stands outside of the context of twisted love as far as his relationships go, save for the interpretations for one or two here and there. I can't help but think that though he wouldn't be good for anyone as he is in the story, being accepted by someone he loved would make him want to be and therefore is better for it.

I just feel like I've done so much repeating myself as far as Shizuo goes lol. Izaya is definitely the more beloved of the two of them in this fandom, but I think it would be fair to say Shizuo is close to the same level of complexity as him if not maybe a little less.

Here is a ramble under the cut lol.

Shizuo to me has always been a representation of many antithetical messages against drrr's purpose: he's very chronically offline despite being well known, he's not in love with anyone despite most of the story circling around people's obsessive love for each other, and most importantly the man is both human and inhuman. Drrr's an urban fantasy, but it offers no explanation behind the phenomenon of his strength. I would argue he is one of drrr's greatest unsolved mysteries (as well as unsolved plot points). He's so fun!

And a little off topic maybe, but it's also why I find Shizaya such a great ship. Shizuo is in one of the most twisted and negative relationships in the whole show, and it has nothing to do with love! Shizuo himself isn't really the type of guy to BE a toxic lover who did anything selfishly or sacrificed others for his own happiness, so it just seems weirdly intentional but also profound that he doesn't really have anybody? I am not being obtuse by intentionally excluding the whole thing with Vorona but like... I'm sorry, it just seems very one sided? And to argue that his actions at the end of drrr are executed solely on his love for her and not his hatred of Izaya is just obtusely selective in and of itself.

Just to be clear, I'm not arguing that Shizuo isn't a toxic person. I just think that overall the positive relationships he has have positive outcomes and the negative relationships he has are always complex and carry nuances because Shizuo isn't a bad person, but he has a very narrow minded logic. His simpleton nature actually makes him appear to have many layers, at least in my opinion.

But back to the original subject at hand which is it Shizuo would be an insecure or possessive love or somewhere mixed between the two. The thing is that I think Shizuo would have to fundamentally change his perspective of life before he was even able to bring himself to love someone, so it's a bit of a moot point I guess? HOWEVER, upon reaching that point, I feel like he would be the type of lover to find a relationship to be a growing process. I hc him as a hopeless romantic type. Love is love is love to him and he'd have to learn how to not let his reactive anger over feeling insecure in his relationship AND his reactive anger over wanting to have the person beside him at all times even in a protective way to overpower him before he could even accept another person's love. I think he's the type of guy to have that noble sort of resolve about him.

Shizuo's got a lot of Shonen protag in him, and I've said this in the past but Shonen protag mentalities do not always apply well to the real world- which drrr is both set and not set in! That's why I apply reality to it so much. It's just my special little blorbo that I just can't seem to be normal about, and he's one of the main reasons.

Shizuo Headcanons

Here's random inconsequential headcanons I have with no real basis in canon just because I can:

HC Shizuo would be a casual One Piece enjoyer and his favorite character would be Zoro. He'd enjoy the plot and the themes of friendship and conquering your dreams and overcoming hardship.

HC He's always wanted to learn how to play the saxophone. Not enough to actually take the time to go to classes, but he definitely has thought about it. He also thinks Jazz music is super cool.

HC He hates amusement parks and water slides and any attraction that has big rides whatsoever. He's always afraid he's gonna get blown away or he's gonna blow someone else away.

HC He has a lot of respect for gardeners, maids, nurses, and teachers because of the discipline it takes to care for something. Even though he was a little shit in school, he always thanked his teachers albeit in the crass rude way that he did. More than once, he threw someone because they crushed a flower he'd seen someone else tending carefully to. He takes notice of others' silent labor and is more thoughtful than he looks.

HC He actually has tried hobbies and things to help with his anger like journaling or painting but he broke his pens/paintbrushes too often. He has some old paintings in his parents storage space that he never finished because he got too in his own head and irritated that it wasn't helping.

HC He also tried baking, which wasn't bad but he realized that if he didn't have people around to eat the food, it went to waste. Wasting food annoyed him so he felt like it was having the opposite effect on his temper.

HC He casually likes Nintendo games like Mario, Kirby, and Pokemon. He has to be careful on any time based RPGs since he can't grip the controllers too tightly or get too excited. He LOVES Legend of Zelda a lot, but had a hard time playing it without crushing a controller or two, so now he watches Shinra and Celty play it every once in a while.

HC He might enjoy streaming but he gets annoyed by certain types of commentators and any obvious marketing ploys to get money out of them. He can't stand what he sees as blatant every day manipulation that's done shamelessly, and he can't respect people like that (he's a bit judgy).

HC He canonically likes baseball and professional fighting, but when he heard wrestling was fake, he was incredibly disappointed. He still likes to watch it every once in a while. He's not fully convinced.

HC he really likes rap music as an art form and has memorized several different songs even if he's too bashful to try rapping himself (Ono D can probably rap tbh). He could probably do really well if he were drunk.

HC he could also opera sing if he weren't a fucking coward.
