What Happens When You haven’t Seen a Dentist for a Long time One of the reasons I became a periodontist was I thought it was really the most interesting and the most all-encompassing specialty.
As a periodontist from Babylon, New York with a practice that specializes in treating gum disease and placing dental implants, I get patients who have been away from dentistry for a long time.
When patients who come to us have not seen a dentist for a long time, there is a tendency that we will not know where to start, especially with people with very complex problems.
The periodontist, however, is a dental specialist that has enough training in all the various disciplines of dentistry to be able to help people like that. Â Rather than not knowing where to start, I actually find it gratifying.
People come in for reasons such as not liking the way their teeth look, being unable to chew, not liking their smile, being unable to function well, or being embarrassed.  They have a multitude of complex problems, and we do the untangling for them, one problem at a time, and help the patient get what they want — which, for most people, is a good-looking smile, as well as the confidence that comes with the smile and the confidence that comes with being able to chew and eat anything they want.
