Hi everyone! I wanted to take some time out to talk about two important topics: reposting and crediting.

As a few of you may know, I make a lot of graphics and such for my blog. Most of it is posted pretty much exclusively to Tumblr. I have a Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and DeviantArt, but my primary place to post is Tumblr.

This brings me to the first topic: reposting. (For those who don’t know, reposting is basically when someone takes an image or screenshot from an already existing post, and uses it to create a new post that is linked to their own account rather than the original creator’s) On Tumblr, I do ask that you please do not repost my stuff. After all, if you found it on Tumblr then chances are you’re looking at the original post (or a reblog). Reblogging it is SO much faster and easier than saving the image to your computer and then creating a whole new photoset, and it gives my work exposure!

The first two pics are screenshots from Instagram, where some people have been reposting my work (original here). I am not opposed to people sharing my work Instagram, but please, please, please remember two things:

Credit the artist! A link back to the original post or blog is best. (#dahliasheng doesn’t really help because most people may either overlook it or don’t know what it’s referring to)

Please do not crop out watermarks! The graphics and edits I do take a lot of time to make, so having someone else take credit for them can be quite frustrating!

Which brings me to crediting. First and foremost, if you’re unsure about an artist’s stance on sharing their work on different sites, ASK them. I guarantee you most artists will happily answer your questions about it.

Again, including a link to where you found the image or the artist’s website/blog is generally the way to go when it comes to crediting. Tumblr even automatically generates shortlinks to posts, for easier sharing.

If you’re on mobile, the Tumblr app makes sharing to Twitter and Facebook very easy, all while linking back to the Tumblr post.

You might be wondering, what’s the big deal? The thing is, art takes time and effort. For example, any one of the SuperAvengers pieces easily takes 2-3 days each to do from start to finish. Would you like working hours on something important to you, only to have someone come along afterwards and take all the credit? The same goes for writing, crafting, etc.

And finally, please do not crop out or alter watermarks. As you can see on the bottom 2 pictures above, someone took graphics I created (originals here) and altered the watermark to include their own username (‘el guardian del cielo’). This is pretty disrespectful (imo). I understand wanting to translate it into different languages, but that can be easily accomplished by typing it into the comments or description. The adding of their own username to the picture, however, is what really frustrates me. Basically it’s implying that this was a joint effort and that they contributed half the work, which is definitely not the case.

Please be considerate to artists! Taking a few moments to properly give credit makes a world of difference! And if you’re not sure, don’t be afraid to ask! Many artists I know and/or seen usually have a FAQ page or will happily answer questions.
