Austin Music Festival: The Neighbourhood Interview |x| (HIGHLIGHTS)
q: when do you first remember sound having a major impact on your life?
a: (bryan) when i came out of the womb and had hearing and wasn't deaf. (jesse) i don't remember that, i don't remember that day. (bryan) oh, i remember it vividly! like it was yesterday.
q: are there any new sounds you may be interested in experimenting with?
a: (jesse) we were just on an airplane, i don't know, probably about a month ago, and there was a baby crying so i sampled that, i thought that was kinda cool.
q: have you had any happy accidents in the studio that ended up on the album?
a: (jesse) not in the studio, but during the demo process, uh, we have a song called 'alleyways', and uh, we were doing it in my room, and jeremy, like, did something on his guitar, and made this like, creaking kinda noise, so i took it and, like, took 4 bars of it and looped it through the whole song, and it ended up sticking and it's on our album now.
q: who are major music influences of yours?
a: (jeremy) all of us come from different backgrounds, like he (jesse) really likes hip-hop, i really like classic rock, he's like (points to zach), radiohead. *all begin talking at once*
q: what was the first tune you learned?
a: (jeremy) playing guitar, you learn like, iron man or crazy train first. (bryan) i learned a beatles song, i can't remember what it was. (jeremy) oh, you're way cooler than all of us. (bryan) yeah, i would jam with my brother and my dad, pretty cool.
q: what do you have lined up after south by?
a: (zach and bryan) coachella. (bryan) and then, uh, we have some dates with foals, and then our album is going to come out after coachella so we're going to do some europe dates and some u.s dates.
q: what was the worst job you had before you were a musician full-time?
a: (bryan) i had a desk job one time doing royalties, so i was basically sitting at a desk. like, typical computer screen, black and green, giving people one penny. so all day, i'm just hitting 1, enter, 1, enter. from 9-5. (jesse) what a horrible paycheck. (bryan) one cent? yeah until you get someone like elton john or something.
q: if you weren't named The Neighbourhood, what would you call the band?
a: (jesse) i don't know... that was kind of a part of us from the beginning. that was like one of the things that formed us, i feel like, was our name. i think that it formed so much of us. i don't know what kind of band we'd be... (bryan) BUDDY.
