Safe Passage

Piper wasn't sure if there was any type of job that could, or should, be considered her favorite. The nature of work made liking any particular task difficult. Whether it was smuggling arms or bodyguarding or doing something a little more messy and a lot more illegal, she could say with certainty that most of her work was not something any normal person could consider even remotely likable. But these jobs certainly came close. Smuggling refugees out of hostile environments they called it. To her, it was saving people. And as bitter as she tended to be on the best of days about her situation, she had to admit, there was something nice about knowing that her and her skills could be used to help others from time to time.
The ship's engine quietly faded, allowing the waves to slowly rock it up to the dock until it was close enough to drop its boarding ramp. A group of men and women dressed in black and gold uniform and carrying weapons slung across their back slowly came down. Once they'd swept the greater area, they began lining up and ushering people on board. Among them stood a short woman. She stood on ledge looking over the ramp, rabbit ears flapping in the wind as she used her arms to direct people onto the boat and into certain areas to sit or rest. Judging by the way she barked orders to the crew and they scrambled to fulfill them, she was the captain.
Eventually, she came down to help in the effort upon realizing that it wasn't moving fast enough. She approached one of the newcomers and her son, setting a gently hand on her shoulder with a reassuring, "come on then, come on. Almost there. Just gotta getcha onboard and we'll find ya a room."
