HEADCANON #3

Izumi, Akemi, Kenoa, and Ronin have pretty typical first words ("Dada" & "Mama")

Kya II's first word is "Oogies," thanks to her Dad's constant teasing of her Aunt Katara and Uncle Zuko (Sokka is embarrassed, especially since she clearly thinks it's his name; Katara finds the whole thing hilarious)

Bumi II's first words are "Yip Yip" (Aang couldn't be prouder; the GAang thinks it's cute)

Ryu's first word is "Umi," thanks to his inability to say "Izumi" at that age (This becomes Izumi's nickname amongst her siblings & cousins; Zuko ad Iroh call her "Lotus Blossom"; Iroh calls her "My Favorite Fire Lord" when she's a teen; Sokka calls her "Zum Zum"; Toph calls her "Sparky Jr." from day 1)

Jingyuan's first word is "Shit." No one wonders which parent he got that one from. (He says it at an international summit with his Dad, and his Uncles Zuko and Sokka in attendance; Aang is mortified and apologizes profusely to all present; Sokka laughs so hard he cries and falls out of his chair; Zuko spits out his tea all over the Earth King, he laughs so hard; Toph cackles and snorts when they tell her afterwards, completely unashamed just amused and proud)

Yua's first word is "Moo." (Her parents are confused at first, until they realize she yells it particularly animatedly at her PaPa, who calls her "My Little Moon and Stars")

Tenzin's first word is "Momo." (Toph says that's close enough to "Mama," so that means 2 out of 3 kids chose her as their first word, so she wins -- even though Aang is unaware of them ever being in a competition over that)

My Taang dunebabies:

Tenchi (He/Him) - Airbender

•Age: 27 •Sky Bison: Poppy

The man who carries his father's legacy. Tenchi maybe an airbender, but his teaching methods scream Earthbender.

He named his sky bison after his grandmother - Poppy.

Chojun (He/Him) - Earthbender

•Age: 25 •Sky Bison: Razor

AKA Mr. Tofu, at least that's what his mother calls him. Chojun is a skilled farmer and master gardener. The man has dedicated his life and the Beifong Estate to the growing and harvesting of soybeans.

Despite being an incredibly talented Earthbender, Chojun was bonded to a sky bison.

Lin (She/Her) - Earthbender

•Age: 23

Reserved and headstrong, Lin, is an architect by trade but her real passion is archeology. On any chance she gets she explores and excavates ancient air temple ruins.

Another passion of hers is a certain steamy prince from the Fire Nation. She's calm and collected most of the time until he shows up.

Houa (She/Her) - Airbender

•Age: 22 •Sky Bison: Taro

Pronounced "HWA." Houa is actually named after her grandmother. During their travels, Aang and Toph uncovered old Air Nomad records and discovered the names of Aang's parents.

Born to soar, you would swear that she was a bird.

Suni (She/They) - Airbender

•Age: 20 •Sky Bison: Socks

You can always find Suni with a book or scroll in hand. They work as the Western Air Temple's head librarian.

Ying (She/Her) - Earthbender

•Age: 17

Her goal is to succeed her mother as the world's greatest Earthbender. She is the assistant instructor at her mother's Earthbending Academy.

Gyatso (He/Him) - nonbender

•Age: 15

He has the heart of an Airbender but the sensibilities of an Earthbender. A talent for baking and cooking, Gyatso hopes to become a famous chef.

DUNEBABIES (3/7)

Bumi, Lin & Tenzin

Ravings of a mad woman under the cut...

I know this probably isn't a popular headcanon but I can't get the idea of Taang as that couple who end up with a ludicrous number of children out of my head (probably because I'm the second of five myself).

So here are the first three.

I honestly love the dynamic of the canon kids in theory, could've gone without the absent father implications tho so these guys are kind of inspired a bit more by canon.

Bumi was born ten years post-canon, then Lin two years later, then Tenzin one year later.

Bumi was the first Gaang baby, and therefore is a bit of a protector of the next gen group. Growing up with such powerful parents led to him growing up looking forward to being an Airbender or Earthbender himself. When this didn't happen, he was heartbroken, and has felt this like a heavy weight on him ever since. After new Airbenders started being born, he started to feel like more and more of an imposter. He eventually decided to dedicate himself to being useful any way he could, trying to separate himself from his identity as the Avatar's son as much as possible. He uses hammers and Earthbending techniques (think that guy in Zuko Alone) working as a sort of bodyguard for Izumi, Kya and Lin.

Lin is kind and caring but can also be incredibly stern and steely. Despite being an Earthbender, she's fiercely proud of her Airbender heritage, and was able to pass the trials for being a Master at the age of fourteen using her skilled Earth and Metal bending. She is often the one taking charge and organising the others, though this can sometimes lead to her being called bossy by Kya the group. Her steadfast devotion to her values can cause her to clash with Toph. While she loves all her siblings, she is especially protective of Bumi, always trying to build him up, whether by sparring with him or defending him from gossip.

Tenzin is often seen as the golden child, and to an extent this is true. He feels immense responsibility as Aang's first airbender child. Even though he would later have two more Airbender siblings, he is often looked at as the next leader of the Airbenders. This is a life he truthfully doesn't want. Tenzin is quiet and introverted, not much enjoying speaking to big crowds or even just being in them. This makes him somewhat of an enigma in his big, chaotic family. While he often prefers to be left alone, he loves his siblings whole-heartedly. He has a strained relationship with Bumi and Lin, since after he gained his bending, many started to ignore the first two. Aang never favoured him over the others since Toph (and Katara, and Zuko, and Sokka etc) Would have pummeled him if he did, but the idea of Tenzin as the Avatar's 'true' child cut deep. He struggles to get along with Bumi in particular, him being so much stronger, braver and more skilled than he thinks he is.

The family has a nomadic lifestyle, going between temples and providing services. They technically aren't affiliated to any one nation, though if they did have a consistent home it wld probably be the Southern Temple.

I made a post years ago abt this, but the way I see it, it's stupid that Airbending has to be passed down genetically. The way I see it, ppl from all nations start following the Air nomad lifestyle as Aang and Toph travel, and then some of the second generation start to be born as Airbenders. Aang only confesses his feelings for Toph after this happens because he didn't want her to think he wld be "repopulating" the Airbenders if they did have children.

I talk about Steambabies all the time, so here are my headcanons for the Bladebabies and Dunebabies.

Sukka:

Yue II - Oldest of the Gaang kids. Waterbender. She was originally a nonbender but gained bending and white hair when Moon Spirit Yue brought her back to life when she was a few days old. Eventually became Chieftess of SWT.

Lin and Suyin - Adopted at 5 and 2 years old. They're not blood related; Lin found Suyin after their homes were destroyed in the Fire Nation civil war and looked after her before Sokka found them. The plan was to drop them off at Jet’s Orphanage, but they grew attached so he brought them home. Both are earthbenders and trained by Toph. Lin is a mama's girl and Suyin a daddy's girl. Lin became chief of police after Suki retired while Suyin traveled the world working odd jobs.

Senna - Surprised baby Sukka had in their 40s. Youngest of the Gaang kids. Nonbender and Kysohi Warrior. Mother of the next avatar.

Taang:

Gyasto II - Earthbender. Oldest twin. Carefree but mellows out with age. Originally wanted to inherit Toph's Pro-Bending ring but joins the army instead after hearing the war stories.

Bumi II - Airbender. Ring leader despite being the younger twin. Prankster. Teaches other air nomads when he gets older. (In this AU, other airbenders survived the genocide and came out of hiding after the Great War ended.)

Do you have any headcanons about kenji and gyasto getting their tattoos?

And good question, can’t say I’ve thought /too/ much about it, but have some ideas…

I think they both get their tattoos when they’re mid to late teenagers. Not super young, but reasonably aged (I might’ve written about it in Taang One Shots but my memory fails me rn—)

Kenji has a hard time temporarily parting with his locks, methinks. He likes his hair a lot, not that it’s long or anything, but he just… prefers to keep it the same lol. The first few weeks where he looked like a lil baldy were tough for him! Gyatso was more chill. But I think they’d both grow out their hair again.

I also think their sisters tease them about being bald. Rub their head for “luck” and stuff LOL.

I think Gyatso’s ceremony was more emotional than Kenji’s, mostly because he was the first in a while to get airbending tattoos. Kenji’s was emotional, but mostly because he’s the baby of the family haha!

Gyatso would be okay with the whole fancy schmancy ceremony. Kenji would grumble and expect his ceremony to be in a badgermole cave or something LOL.

I feel like afterwards, Gyatso takes “rebuilding the Air Nation” legacy more seriously than he used to. Once he’s finally considered a master of airbending, there’s more of legacy pressure he feels. I don’t think that Aang or Toph put that on him, but he naturally feels that because he’s the oldest airbender in the family and whatnot.

Aang is of course emotional at the time the boys get their tattoos, but so is Toph. She’s proud of her boys for becoming masters and truly dedicating themselves to their bending. She gets a lil teary eyed when she pats their bald heads <3

I love taang dunebabies, but also at the same time there's a part of me that doesn't like the idea of aang and toph being forced to have kids do to him being one of the last airbenders. I love the idea of aang learning more about the spirited world and figuring out a way to find people who have the capability and ancestry to be airbenders and him giving that ability to them or waking it up inside them. Than maybe when Aang and Toph are older and things are more relaxed and they've traveled a bit they could have kids, or adopt some that they met on their travels. I'm a sucker for found family.
