One dead, several hurt as Dutch train derails after hitting crane on tracks
The driver of a train has been killed and seven others injured after it hit a maintenance crane and derailed in the Netherlands. Pictures on Dutch news websites showed four carriages lying on their side in a field after the collision, which happened at around 9am local time (8am UK time) in Dalfsen, 75 miles (120km) east of Amsterdam. An eyewitness told Dutch radio station NOS the crane was on caterpillar tracks and was crossing the railway line at the time. Mayor Hans Noten said the driver had died and added there were not many passengers on the train, which was travelling at full speed, at the time.
Luckily it wasn't the busiest train, so as regards casualties it won't be as bad as it could have been.
Mayor Han Noten
He said two people were taken to hospital and five others were treated at the scene and released. Investigators are heading to the scene to try to establish the cause of the crash on the line between the eastern cities of Zwolle and Emmen. Police have detained the driver of the crane for questioning as part of the investigation. The train was operated by Arriva, a subsidiary of German company Deutsche Bahn.
