Rest in peace Carol. You were a lovely little hamster. Thank you Cathryn and Pet Valu Dundas staff for looking after Carol and loving her until the end. #repost @dundaspetvalu ... Carol you will be SO missed😓 Tragically Tuesday night we found Carol in immense distress. We rushed her to an emergency vet where we were told she had a prolapsed bowel. She was clearly in a great deal of discomfort and had lost a lot of blood. The most humane course of action was to have her euthanized. I know we gave her a great life in her “luxury condo” at the store and smorgasbord of yummy food, but I will always wonder if there was something i could have done differently or better. One thing is for sure, Carol taught us a lot about #dwarfhamsters and their very specific likes and dislikes. There is no question, we are far better off for having her stay with us! Thank you @ladybirdanimalsanctuary for entrusting us with her care and for rescuing her in the first place! It’s fascinating to watch them & see them very gradually learn to trust & somewhat tolerate you!😂 It’s all on their terms though! Waking them up will likely lead to you being bit😫& cause undo stress on them (just like if you were woken from a deep sleep over & over) #hamsters don’t see very well and so rely primarily on sounds & smell to navigate their environment. Therefore, you don’t want them to associate your scent with something negative! Too much stress can also lead to illness & since they are naturally nocturnal it can be frustrating to only have short bursts of time with them!😴😭 Not the most ideal “starter pet”! Also, the diet of a dwarf hamster needs to be monitored & planned & not just a bag of premixed food with lots of corn, sugary cereals & fruit. Dwarf Hamsters are susceptible to diabetes and therefore need to have low sugar intake with more fresh greens, healthy proteins, grains & some seeds. We even give our dwarf hamsters freeze dried mealworms & little bits of plain yogurt, which they now lick off our fingers!! The @oxbowanimalhealth hamster pellets, however, are also a good staple to have available. Additionally, they need lots of room to explore & exercise, to keep them happy & healthy & chew sticks & toys to relieve boredom & work those sharp little teeth!😬 If you’re prepared for a couple of downsides of looking after a dwarf hamster, the pluses are well worth it! OFFER: Dwarf Hamster Items

I have some very nice hamster stuff I'd love to unload. These are for DWARF hamsters only - breeds such as Roborovski or Siberian are ideal. These items will not be suitable for any breed bigger, not even Syrians. I have two cages in very good condition, plus some random attachable pieces. Water bottles and some climbing apparatuses. I might be willing to part with some attachable tubes for a good cause.
