First Kiss Experiment || {dxadem}

We asked twenty strangers to kiss for the first time...

Where Starfire had come from, kissing wasn't common. Of course they did it, it wasn't as if she was entirely clueless on the matter, but it held little meaning, so reason would say that this should be nothing. Yet now that she was standing there, in the middle of a room, cameras and lights trained on her, and waiting for someone else to be ushered in, a curious feeling stirred in her stomach.

Perhaps this wasn't a good idea after all. Perhaps if she turned and left now, maybe they would understand, maybe she wouldn't have to--

The Tamaranean's eyes snapped up at the sound of an opening door. The butterflies went wild.

"Um..." She took a deep, steadying breath. "...Hello!"

{ A rustle of fabric, the bang of a poorly-wielded wooden sword as it slammed against a wall, the patter of feet, and a shout-- } 

                         "I'll get you!" 

{ ----followed by a high peal of laughter. 

          Immaculate outfits wrinkled and folded from all the running about they'd been doing; hair mussed up, sticking out at odd angles despite the best efforts of an army of pins, clips, and clasps; faces red from the exercise and all the giggling. Hans and Helena, for once, painted a very unroyal portrait-- their mother might have a conniption if she'd seen the state they were in. Not only were they thoroughly messy, but Helena had yanked down a gauzy curtain from the window, which was now draped across her back; even worse, the shimmery blue of the curtain did not match that orange dress in the least. However, whether their outfits matched was the least of their concerns at the moment-- for that curtain wasn't a curtain but dragons' wings, that wooden sword wasn't a toy but Excalibur. When the opportunity arose a game of Knights & Dragons, they were both loathe to pass it up. 

               As the both of them paused to catch their breath, Hans thought about asking if they should switch-- he'd like a turn with those wings, and he was sure Helena would appreciate being the White Knight for a while. And then a door banged open and Hans couldn't voice his question because his brother had caught them at their game. 

                                             Franz.

     It was Franz in particular, out of all his brothers, who made Hans boil over with rage. One might think it would be the twins, but them he could handle; Wil and Wolf had a natural mischievous streak, and there was hardly a moment when they weren't at some scheme. Their games were to be expected, normal. They'd been playing at one this past year and a half; one day, Hans had become invisible in their eyes, and they'd been pretending it since. Sometimes it was nice, not having to put up with their irritating prattle. ( Or, at least, Hans could convince himself it was. He's better at pretending even than them. )

          But Franz was another story. If no one was around other than Hans, Helena, and Franz, he was kind to them-- at least somewhat. The moment anyone else was around, however, Hans was as invisible to Franz as he was to Wil and Wolf. He'd rather have had a complete rejection than kindness behind closed doors and dismissal when they opened. Closed-door kindness gave a tiny hope-against-hope that things might be different and then destroyed it--                               ----and the fact that he even still felt that hope made him wrathful. 

     Hans had lost himself in his thoughts for a moment; only now did he realize Franz had been speaking-- and Helena didn't quite seem pleased with whatever he'd said. } 

     "--...What was that?" 

                    "----You never listen, do you, Hans? I said that I won't tell Mother and                      Father about your game-- if you let me play. And I have to be the Knight." 

     "It's Helena's turn." 

                    "Not anymore." 

{ Franz's terms were begrudgingly accepted; Hans was given those dragon wings-- though now that his brother had taken it, he coveted the knight's sword-- and a irritated Helena was relegated to the position of fair maiden to be saved. Neither is happy with the new arrangement, but protesting it will only prompt Franz to get them in trouble. 

          Besides, one of their older siblings interacting with them in any way was rare as it is; might as well take what they get. 

     So a game entertaining only for Franz ensued, involving him 'killing' Hans every few minutes and forcing Helena to talk about how very, very grateful she was to be rescued.

               Wil and Wolf's appearance was almost a relief--                                              --almost. } 

     "Franz, Hel, are you playing Knights & Dragons without a dragon?" 

                    "You're much too old for imaginary friends. Or perhaps you're playing a                      game with spirits?" 

{ One horrid excuse about 'being bored' later, and Franz was leaving the room with the twins, Hans once again invisible to him. 

     Helena didn't go, though the three of them called back to her, and poked more fun at her 'imaginary friend' when she refused.                 Only worthwhile person in this whole family besides me. 

     Hans would've brushed it off--                ----and then he noticed that Franz had taken their wooden sword with him. Without Excalibur, there would be no more dragon-slaying for Helena or Hans; the wings on his back were once again just unimpressive pieces of cloth. 

          And that small injustice opened the door on his outrage. 

          A gauze curtain was thrown to the floor and stomped on; he started walking and then running and then sprinting across the room, but realized too late he'd been running towards the main entrance and he couldn't go the way his brothers had gone. It'd seem like he was following them; it'd seem pathetic. 

          He thought of Helena, watching all of it, and thought perhaps he should have concealed this from her, but it was too late for that, much too late. So he simply stopped where he was and sank to the floor-- and just sat there, stared forward, hugged his knees.

               Didn't say a word. }
