Enterprise, Intranet & ERP Mobility
A very interesting current day problem has arisen; there are thousands of firms in this country who have invested tens-of-millions of dollars each on Enterprise Software and Intranet platforms. These firms have tens-of-thousands or even a hundred-thousand employees with an extremely complex framework in place.
These systems take years to develop and implement with 2007 platforms coming online in 2010 or so. Now fast forward three years and $10 million later; these same firms are not up-to-date with mobile. And who can blame them; does anybody remember how slow mobile internet was just 3 or 5 years ago?
Why is this important?
Everyone knows that in a firm with thousands of employees it is pretty easy for some bad seeds to slip through the cracks. Conversely and even worse; there is a couple A team employees that slip through the cracks as well.
Ideally the bad seeds would be transitioned out and the A team employees are promoted. The problem becomes that it is extremely difficult for an individual HR Manager to track employees. HR employee evaluation tools are simple manager, individual and peer reviews.
These internal interviews are trying to get to the bottom of an employee’s behavior, mindset and ability to add value to the firm. The ability to measure an employee based on their behavior, personality, ability to communicate, whether they are a thought leader and source of information within the firm are all extremely important to know.
But how does this apply to what we are talking about?
Employees should be allowed to message each other, create forums and have internal chats. Constant contact through tablets and Smartphone’s with an enterprise platform is extremely important. Mobile is a facilitator in the efficient use of the firms platform. VPN log in with a laptop, I'm sorry to say, is just simply not the same as an effective mobile site or iPad app.
Social Dynamic and an Example
Lets take a single employee as an example; let's say Susan Be-q is an outstanding employee. Susan, when logged in and communicating with employees is asked questions about the platform, product, clients or anything else. Her answers are always correct and employees know this, so they come to her quite often. Susan is obviously a leader within the firm and deserves to get a promotion.
But let's say that Susan spends 25% of her time on the road so she can't always be logged into the ERP because her laptop is too bulky to carry around. Maybe Susan sometimes goes 5-7 days without answering questions because of this. Now remember HR? Let’s say HR is using simple bar charts or graphs to measure Susan. Unfortunately they may determine she is a lazy employee who takes too long on average to answer her peer’s questions.
Believe it or not we have actually seen this happen before.
A highly functional mobile website or app would enable Susan to be in constant contact with the platform. An audit a Mobile Enhanced instance would show that Susan stands out as the great employee that she is. And thus, the cream rises to the top.
