come christmas day
At a glance, the Avery manor had been transformed into a picturesque Christmas wonderland. The windows were permanently tinted with frost, a lovely tree had been dragged in from the surrounding grounds and decorated to perfection, and every room hosted something festive, from Christmas stars to tinsel. There was no doubt Sage Avery and the house elves had worked hard to make it look perfect. But underneath it all, it felt wrong.
A fifth of the packages was missing from under the tree. The roasted sweet potatoes that had been his favourite had been made but was left untouched on the table. The chairs had been spread out to try and cover up the missing one but it was painfully obvious that it was too empty. No cheeky remarks on the food, or guesses on the presents that would be opened the next morning. No carols with crude lyrics instead of the real ones. No spiked eggnog and no bottle of scotch with a bow on top and note that this was her _real _present waited for her in the room.
Sage had tried, but the house was empty. Haunted.
seven devils ↠ the frasers
Nothing felt as good as coming home. Lennox missed walking through the grounds surrounding the house; he missed petting his dogs; he missed the smell of the laundry powder and the way there was silence. It’d been a long journey from Scotland to London then back to Scotland, and Lennox had left Flora at the top of the stairs and fell asleep the moment he hit his bed, but they’d been home for a full day, and he felt sufficiently recovered. His trunk remained unpacked, sitting like a constant reminder at the end of his bed, and he’d managed to kick it open to find his dress robes. They were having dinner with the Thornbrooks that night - Christmas even tradition, as it were. The Frasers gave their Christmas Eve to the Thornbrooks in exchange for having Christmas Day to themselves, for which Lennox was grateful. Holidays tended to make their mother worse, the stress and guilt making for a bad combination that would’ve spilled over had they been forced out of the house. Lennox, showered and wearing only his pants, scrubbed the towel over his head to dry his hair a little more. It was getting long, and he pushed it back off his face before pulling open the door to the bathroom that he shared with Flora, finding that she was already in there.
“Good, you’re getting ready,” Lennox said, not wanting to say that he’d feared she’d boycott the dinner entirely. The Thornbrooks were among Flora’s least favourite people, and almost every holiday season ended with some new kind of bad blood between them that Lennox desperately tried to mop up year-round. “I know I say this every year, but do you think we can just... have a nice dinner tonight?” Lennox said, half-sighing. “They’re not going to be polite and they’re not going to be loving - they’re probably going to make thinly-veiled comments about all kinds of things before telling you to find a husband. So don’t act surprised - and don’t react,” Lennox said, rubbing his hair with the towel once more before tossing it into the hamper. “Alright?” Lennox asked, looking at Flora in the reflection of the mirror, eyes looking over her face - he knew that being home was the worst time of the year, but he’d always hoped that his presence eased a little of that for her. “For me?”
