I don’t understand why The Swapsies, based in Liverpool, aren’t more well known in the indiepop world. They caught me instantly with their first digital single, “You’re My Maillot Jaune” b/w “Hey There You!” Since that release in 2011, the band has acquired two new members, including drummer Elaine who provides backing vocals that give the newer songs an added layer of depth. The Swapsies have released a single on February Records, an EP on their own Lovelypool Recordings, and a collaboration with Jam on Bread for the new Between Two Waves project from Eardrums Pop.
The songs are extremely well written, catchy and with lyrics that often seem autobiographical. “Sparrows,” the title track of their latest CD-EP, was partially written based on Andy Warhurst’s trip to NYC. Their collaborative song on Between Two Waves was based on a trip Andy took to Norway, coming home with extra currency. The band is heavily influenced by early Belle and Sebastian in the best possible way. As the band themselves describe, they want to create “friendly pop.” With songs relating to football, love, lust, and, being shy, they definitely succeed.
The Swapsies will be hosting their second Lovelypool event in Liverpool on 20 July, playing alongside The Very Most and Yakuri Cable. You can download their free single from February Records or order their physical releases from the band directly.
