Not feeling especially patriotic recently for obvious reasons, but I’m looking forward to having the day off tomorrow to rest and reflect. Introduction: Typical of the early Blues recordings released by OKEH RECORDS, the earliest “race records” label founded by the New York City-based Otto Heinemann Phonograph Corporation, is the 1920 gem “Crazy Blues,” by Mamie Smith (c.1883-1946). Smith had a beautiful voice that has withstood the test of time. Written by musician and composer Perry Bradford (1893-1970), the song was recorded on August 10, 1920. The song is something of a milestone in the history of recorded music, opening the door for female Blues singers. It was also a runaway bestseller, selling 75,000 copies during the first two months of its release, mostly to African-American music consumers, but also to a small yet robust population of white listeners who loved the music.

A beautiful cache of brown wax cylinders in the current Nauck auction. It includes some really interesting records, but it's also something to behold with the original case and slips.
