The obsessive act of reasserting my ties with the earth is an objectification of my existence.
Ana Mendieta
Had a post from a frustrated student having trouble staying the course. Man, it can be hard to stick to it when the world offers so many bad choices. Here is my video response to her. I know she can do this. One day at a time. One step at a time. It does get easier. It does get better. If you have struggled and now you are doing great, please comment so she can read your words of encouragement.
I trip out when I look at old photos of myself. Notice how my skin is oily or covered with perspiration. I am eating dinner, not running or even walking, but just sitting and my body is either running hot or my skin is trying to exude toxins fast enough to keep up with what I was putting in my mouth. Crazy how people think that "shine" in the photo is natural. That is your body working hard to get healthy. Now, all my photos come out with a non-glossy, matte finish. No more oily shine or sweaty photos. Just me, the way nature intended it.
Life without bananas
I love bananas like the majority of my raw food, 80/10/10 friends, but I don’t have to eat them daily. There are so many other great fruit options out there that I do not have to eat bananas every day. 30 bananas a day is simply one way to represent eating enough calories. The average banana containing 100 calories multiplied by 30 bananas equalling 3000 calories.
Yes, bananas are awesome, found year round and very cheap. One of the lowest cost per calorie of all fruit. I admit to eating my fair share, usually in between seasons of other fruit. I prefer to follow seasonal ripeness in my fruit selections. Tangerines and other citrus in the winter. Watermelon and stone fruit in summer. Cherries in the spring. Apples in the fall. Daily greens.
I still love bananas. But variety and seasonality keep this lifestyle fun and exciting.
Lost Children
Today I packed an apricot in my daughter's lunch. I picked her up early for an appointment and asked her about what she had for snack time. She said she hadn't eaten the apricot yet, but that all her friends had touched it and inspected it. None of them had ever seen one before and they were fascinated by it. Granted, she is 7 and in first grade, but it goes to show how far removed our society is from our food. Here is a good way to write up a farm bill. Subsidize farmers so we can bring fresh fruit and vegetables into our schools and teach children about proper nutrition. Make it hands and mouths on. Make it interactive. Make it natural.
