Eastgate: 1917-2017 Centennial
In 1917, the subdivision of Eastgate was developed and founded on the Near East Side of Columbus. It was an affluent suburb within the city. Six Tuskegee Airmen, former Ohio Supreme Court Justice Robert M. Duncan, and WVKO pioneering icon Eddie Saunders are among those who have called the Near East Side enclave home through the first century of Eastgate.
Last weekend, to celebrate 100 years as a community, there were three events held to commemorate the centennial. First up on Thursday night, there was a screening of a documentary on the neighborhood, produced by Christina Paolucci and Scott Spears, at the Main Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library. Then, on Saturday morning, there was a walk around Eastgate, co-sponsored in part by the Columbus Landmarks Foundation. Finally, on Saturday afternoon, there was a picnic in the triangle at Millbrook Way and Nelson Road, where neighbors celebrated the community with music and door prizes. Paolucci and Spears even interviewed neighborhood residents, as well.
