How to Eat Less by Eating Slower.
Eating Slower: During a meal, your brain receives signals from your stomach and intestines when they say you’re satisfied. But it takes about 20 minutes for those signals traveling to the brain. Thus, if you are a fast fork, eating mouthful after mouthful in quick succession, you can swallow a lot of extra bits – and calories – during this period of time.
Eating Slower: Slowing down, you give those natural signs of satisfaction a chance to tell you – so you can stop eating – before you have eaten more food than your body needs. Eating more slowly also allows you to taste the flavors, aromas and textures of your food. Which contributes to your sense of satisfaction.
Eating Slower: If you are breaking speed records at meals, consider these techniques to slow down.
*Put your fork or spoon on the table after every mouthful. For many people, eating is a continuous movement. The fork or spoon runs from the dish to the mouth. The trick is to get to the mouth a spoonful of food, put the spoon beside the plate, chew, swallow, and only then grab the spoon again. At first this will seem to be unpleasant and tedious. But you will be surprised how quickly you will feel satisfied.
*Swallow what’s in your mouth before preparing the next forkfuls. Many people are busy filling their silverware while the teeth are still chewing.
*If you are eating food that is eaten with hands – pizza, sandwiches, donuts or cookies – take a bite and put the rest on the table while chewing.
*Relax before you start eating. If you are troubled with a problem at work or if the kids are fighting. Take a few deep breaths or read the newspaper to settle down. The key is to calm down first and then start eating slowly.
*Make your meal one dish at a time, instead of family style where all the food is on the table at the same time.
*Check the time of your meals with a clock or kitchen timer to get used to the slower pace.
*Pause briefly for a minute, once or twice during the meal. Converse, take sips a drink or cross your hands on your lap.
*Put slow background music on. Studies have shown that people eat more slowly when they hear slow, soft music.
*When it is time to eat, do nothing but eat. Devote full attention to the meal. Make it a habit to turn off the TV and take the phone off the hook. If you get distracted with other activities, you may not realize how fast – or how much – you are eating.
*Use chopsticks for Chinese food for all types of cuisine. They automatically slow down your rate of intake and the amount of food you will eat. If you excel in the use of chopsticks, so use them with the other hand! As an additional prize, chopsticks leave greasy sauces fall through the cracks and get the dish to which they belong.
*Stand when eating. This helps to relax and focus on eating. Many people do not calculate what you eat when you are standing.
*For example, you can savor every delicious serving of tuna salad on a bed of fresh green leaves, or you can “devour” your tuna straight from the can. Why not make meal time a pleasant event?
*Finally, be creative and develop your own tricks to slow down the eating.
