It actually took me a long time to see the appeal of the series. And this is from someone who found herself initially intrigued. It took a friend who was in the same boat to say, “NO EBBY, GIVE IT TO EPISODE 20.” Which I did that’s where the series starts to shine. Prior to that it is very run of the mill, monster-of-the-week fodder. Also, its before Steven gets ANY sort of development so he’s the epitome of “annoying little shit”.
AND THEN THERE’S WHAT YOU SAID. God its so true. I feel those in the fandom will read my previous comment and boil it down to, “Oh well you’re just some cis-het and this content bothers you because it’s not YOUR identity, WHICH IS EVERYWHERE, and you don’t understand THAT WE FINALLY HAVE A SERIES THAT SHOWS WE ARE HERE AND VALID!” or some nonsense like that. And, you know, that’s great. It’s wonderful to have some something that positively shows and embraces all identities. But people are SO CAUGHT UP IN THAT to where they don’t talk about the issues.
Garnet is made up of literally two gay space rocks. They have a healthy, loving relationship that doesn’t feed into oversexualized stereotypes about lesbians. That is nothing but fantastic and I’m happy the series has developed it this past season. But what about Rose and Pearl? Why has this dynamic been left on the backburner for so long? We know Pearl’s feelings for Rose go beyond admiration and we’ve known FOR A WHILE. What ever happened with Amethyst and Greg’s relationship? From what I have gathered they were friends and then something came in between. I’m not certain if it was Rose’s relationship with Greg or Rose’s death. I’m guessing the latter, but they haven’t touched this since Maximum Capacity, many episodes ago. Amethyst in general needs development asap because she’s got so much inner strife that she hides on a daily basis. Which, again, was introduced a long ass time ago.
We know so little about the war and Homeworld. It’s been 80 something episodes and we just don’t know. Why are crucial elements being thrown to the wayside like this? I’m going into spoiler territory here but THE CLUSTER! Massive plot element that involved character retribution and building for Peridot, Gems working together with their former enemy, one of the reasons why Jasper and Peridot came to earth in the FIRST PLACE to be solved in 12 minutes with a bubble? That’s it? Wow, such a let down here.
Sigh. It’s not a bad show, but it’s not the pinnacle of development and writing that people think it is. I was talking to my friend about it the other day and the first thing out of her mouth was, “I love Steven Universe. Garnet is made of gay space rocks! And Stevonnie is genderfluid and that’s so wonderful.” And it’s always like this. ALWAYS. The moment people get critical and REALLY look at the series past this they’ll see that Rebecca Sugar should probably up her writing and worldbuilding skills.
