The story of Eben Bayer and Gavin McIntyre, two farm boys turned bio-engineers who are harnessing the magical power of nature to help change the world.
Mushrooms Changing the World
I just came back from Albany, NY. First I just want to say that small city was really cool. It had a lot of history and walking through it you can tell. Everyone there I met were really nice, there is something about small cities always having nice people. The main reason I was there was to help shoot a documentary about these two innovators who are basically changing the future with mushrooms. Eben Bayer, the person in the video who also talked in TEDx, is one of the two innovators. The other Gavin Mcintyre, both founders of Ecovative Design, a new company that is expanding very fast where they grow their products. Basically what they are creating is an alternative way to package products with mycelium, which is biodegradable instead of styrofoam and plastics which pollute the earth. This technology can also be used to replace most foam based materials and even insulate houses. Meeting them both inspired me because these two were engineers, not biologists or scientists, but they read so much books on biology, science and even running a business that they somehow innovated and produced a new eco-friendly product that can change the world. It shows that if you focus on it you will achieve it. I really need to focus as much as these guys have.
Nice. I found a write-up with above video in the Times, "Dot Earth" section (by Andrew Revkin, published on February 14, 2012 for full article).
Great concept (and what a relief to my persistent anxiety about how to manage internet shipping needs! There is something out there for chief&mischief to turn to!) Thank you Ecovative Design.
I disagree with one aspect of Mr. Bayer's comments, you need to be able to do your calculus problems (sorry kids). If you can feel it, and also have the discipline to "do the math," you are all the more prepared for the variety of challenges that you will certainly face as an innovator. #mathgirlsraawk!!!
