Echinocereus cinerascens
Echinocereus is a large genus of cacti native to the southwestern U.S. and Mexico. The plant pictured was received by Ruth Bancroft many yeas ago under the name E. enneacanthus, but that species does not have the white flower center seen here, so I have concluded that it is actually E. cinerascens. The purple-and white combination is wonderful! Native to east-central Mexico.

Added the two other planters on the third level patio today. Now all of my collection is back on display and in full sun. Picked up a few new Opuntia, a dyckia and some succulent filler, too.
The first planters got a bit sunburnt earlier this spring, but they’ve recovered fairly well. Hoping the new ones will do better as they’ve been outdoors for two months already!
Echinocereus reichenbachii subsp. baileyi
Wichita Mountain pincushion,
is a subspecies of a narrow range pincushion cacti known to only the Wichita mountain range on granitic barrens of Oklahoma. It’s known for it’s dramatic blooms during late may of vibrant pink. The senu-stricto Echinocereus reichenbachii differs in habitat and appearance; Echinocereus reichenbachii does much better in sandstone than in mineral sand on granite escarpments, it’s spines are also more white in appearance, although E. reichenbachii var. albispinus has the whitest spines out of any vars and sub species.
E. reichenbachii subsp. baileyi has white psuedoglochids, orange radial canthos( spines around the areol) , and orange central canthos(large central spines).
