I've been meaning to ask more about kin stuff so I figured now's a good time as any, especially because I remember you mentioning something on discord earlier about not doing canonmates. So my question is what's the deal with those, I guess? How exactly do people determine that, and what's your view on it? If you don't mind answering that 👉👈

And also, a more you-specific one, do you remember if you and Maya got married? Or what that wedding was like if you did? I know you've said you don't have a ton of memories yet of anything post-trilogy but I also know you've mentioned the Wrightworth wedding before. But I don't recall if you've said anything about how far into your relationship with Maya you remember and I'm curious :3c

i think most people just look for very specific memories to see if they align, things that are a little too coincidental in their aligning memories to be actual coincidences. and it's not that i DONT do that, i very much do, but i just... don't... care about finding 'my' canonmates? and when i do find them, it's not that the 'one' takes any precedent over other people who might share those kintypes.

like i KNOW my girlfriend is my james because she has kin memories that are just too specific. when i wrote my canonfic she was predicting plot twists i didn't exactly set up for. sometimes we'll be talking about a memory and will finish each other's sentences/stories. but that's not usually how i do it--usually it's just, if i feel a deep connection with someone, i consider them mine. to me it feels like i've known them before. sometimes i meet people and i just know i have loved them already.

and likewise, i know 54675476 james kinnies at this point, because we find one another. and even though my gorf is my james, i still just love being close with others. it feels special to have sourcemates near, regardless of if we share a canon. im not interested in finding a be all end all, im just happy to be with old friends in all their forms.

maya and i definitely got married but i still have yet to remember the actual wedding OTL i have little flashes of our life after that, usually in random nowhere hotel rooms or in kurain? but they arent cohesive memories theyre more like feelings. like when i write her she comes so easily to me, i feel like her essence is just kind of etched there on the back of my heart.

i remember that, and i remember the months/year leading up to getting together with her. i remember vague things about the wrightworth wedding but not much else ffhgf. its all a little blurry past the OG trilogy and even during the OG trilogy, most of my memories are from my childhood and into JFA ehehe

but i literally absolutely definitely married maya. i am certain of that.

how do you choose where to end a chapter?

i try to make very episodic chapters w my previous works, but i mostly just intuit it and then ask myself "is this satisfying?"

if it is, i leave it there. if it isn't, i find out what isn't satisfying about it and fix it.

unless the plan is to unnerve my reader, then i do the opposite. sdjkfghsfd

do you try to put themes, motifs, messages, morals, etc in your writing? if so, how do you go about it?

yep! themes and motifs mostly. again, i... kind of just intuit it. there are certain themes already present in characters that i get attached to exaggerating and expand upon.

the best example i can think of is in DTE i was adamant at the start that fire always be portrayed as a force of healing and rebirth. i have my whole fire/phoenix motif just like as a person and a crucial part of that identity in myself was learning that fire does not just destroy. i wanted to always paint it as a cleansing flame in a story so of course i put it in the one that made the most sense. i consistently portray jessie as a hearth, or a protective wildfire, or a torch that lights the darkness. i consistently portray james as a phoenix. any story beat that involves actual fire or imagery of it is a moment of triumph, love, protection, and rebirth.
