This week's newsletter from AthensLive is out: The train crash was NOT a tragedy
* The signs had long been there
* “Tragic human error”? Instead, a series of them from actors with power
* When you control the media, you can alter the story
- are the main headlines to be found inside this highly informative weekly must-read from and about Greece.
The country is grieving the train collision victims on Tuesday, 28 February 2023, at 23.21 in Tempi, Central Greece. The news was shocking. It is “the biggest train accident in Greece’s history,” as the Panhellenic Rail Workers Federation president Ioannis Nitsas said.
As we write, the emergency services are still at work, trying to detect and release the bodies inside - or what remained of them. The number of dead as of Friday was 57; 36 of them confirmed their identity. Thirty-eight passengers are hospitalized, seven of them in ICUs.
This accident, however, was not a tragedy. In ancient tragedies, the hero ignores a substantial piece of information that is meant to shape his destiny. In this case, the state knew and had repeatedly been warned about an accident waiting to happen, mainly due to crucial shortages in infrastructure and understaffing - and yet it let it happen. It cannot be recommended strongly enough to read and share this week's updates on the events and developments in Greece here:

On the legality of photograph reposts
The European Court of Justice has just ruled (Case C‑161/17) that every new publication on the Web of a photograph already published on the Web requires an explicit authorisation of the photograph.
To the best of my understanding, this makes illegal to repost a photograph published on a social media like tumblr without an explicit authorisation of the photograph in case the photograph or the reposter are under the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice (basically, are European Union citizen or live in the European Union).
Such an authorisation can be given by the photograph by using a Creative Common licence through a statement like the following:
Licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Germany (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0 DE)
Information on Creative Common licences is given hier.
The simplest accommodation of the new situation would probably be for tumblr in the future to place, through its conditions of use, all photographs published on tumblr under a Creative Common licence and to automatically add a corresponding statement to every photograph published on tumblr.

The EU Made Margret Thatcher Accept Sex Dolls, Regardless of Their Nationality.
In 1986, Margret Thatcher attempted to ban the import of sex dolls and other sex toys to the UK under the Obscene Publications Act of 1959 the same law that banned the publication of Lady Chatterley’s Lover in 1960 now a hit BBC series. However, German Sex doll manufacturers complained to the European Court of Justice that this ban violated the non-discrimination principle of the European internal market, because sex dolls and other sex toys were already being produced and sold in the UK. The European Court of justice took some time to consider the case, as member state’s can ban certain imports for the sake of the public good, but eventually agreed that it was indeed discriminatory to ban a product from being imported if it was already being produced in that country. The UK was ordered to lift its ban on sex dolls or get a hefty fine. Maggie Thatcher relented, Britain rejoiced, and then left the EU anyway.
