While Eckhart gently massaged circles into your palm muscles with his two hands and spoke softly about his day, you couldn't help but glance at the spectators who so obviously gawked or stared. Hawkeye and Oz, as the more expressive chief knights, hung their jaws partly open, while the rest simply shared perplexed looks. A pause between your fiancé's words prompted you to aim your gaze back at him and nervously smile, brows slightly knit. Eckhart, picking up on your subtle movements as usual, looked up to see what had troubled you, and knowingly looked back down.
"Sorry," he muttered. "I suppose I never told them about you. I can talk to them if you'd like?"
You shook your head quickly and forced a wider smile. "No, that's alright! I don't exactly visit you during work often, so I understand their reactions." Your hand moved subconsciously over Eckhart's as reassurance, and while he didn't look very convinced, he slowly nodded and dropped the subject. The other chiefs eventually resumed about their business within the garden, but you still caught them individually observing you nonetheless.
Not once had Eckhart's hands left your body, to your surprise— restless, his hands wandered over yours, up your arms, and briefly to your sides. You knew he could be quite affectionate behind closed doors, but there hadn't been many opportunities to interact in front of other people for any other reason besides work. You hadn't expected him to be comfortable with public displays of affection, but Eckhart was always one to be full of surprises. It was a pleasant surprise, anyhow.
Eckhart spoke still, although increasingly distracted until he trailed off, focus wandering over your shoulder. Confused, you spun around to see Hawkeye calmly approaching while offering a friendly smile and wave.
Eckhart looked annoyed and seemed to be holding back an eye roll, but you returned Hawkeye's gestures. "Aye, Y/N. You know, I thought you had come to visit your old pal, Hawkeye! I must really be slipping if I didn't pick up on this," Hawkeye said with a grin, waving a hand towards you and Eckhart.
"Aw, Hawkeye, I was coming to see you next," you replied, chuckling.
"Fiancé gets first visit," Eckhart added, intertwining his fingers with yours, almost in an innocently possessive manner. Hawkeye's eyes widened in surprise for a moment, but his expression turned elated at the term "fiancé".
"I see," Hawkeye said. "Well, I'll get out of you hair." After turning away, the pirate threw a playful wink at Eckhart, as if saying we're going to talk all about this later.
Eckhart hummed, dragging his fingers through the hair that framed your face, brushing it back behind your ear. You giggled at the fact he was basically demanding your attention now, but you pulled his hands down to his dismay. "I should really go, too. We both have work to do, goddess forbid Neinheart see us shirk for too long," you said, jutting your chin towards the garden entrance. Eckhart frowned, but nodded.
"Okay," he said. "See you tonight for dinner?"
"Mhm!"
You cupped one hand behind Eckhart's head to bring his lips within reach, giving him a slow head scratch in the process. While balancing on the balls of your feet slightly and softly leaning into a kiss, your other hand blindly searched for the two-faced mask that hung from his belt. Once you managed to unclip it, you parted from Eckhart and playfully placed the mask over his face, giving the mask a peck afterwards for good measure.
"Bye," you said, smiling and backing away slowly.
"Bye," he replied with a small laugh, crossing his arms. With that, you giddily grinned and turned away, headed away from the garden.
When your form finally disappeared from sight and Eckhart looked back to his colleagues, he was met with numerous stares and smirks, with Oz in particular grinning and raising her eyebrows. He sighed, mentally preparing for nosey remarks.
