The line about Philip losing some companions on the journey to Eclipse Lake has always stuck in my mind. Which companions were these? Sure, we know that he tricked a lot of people into helping him, but there’s a chance this could be Caleb and Evelyn. Especially considering that he already had the Titan’s blood when Luz met him in the time pool and neither of them were with him then.

Which means Eclipse lake could have been the place where Caleb was murdered.

Which means Hunter could have been digging his own grave in the exact same place his ancestor was killed.

Ah, the cyclical tragedy of the Grimwalkers! The first one killed by Belos’ hand and every single subsequent one subjected to the same fate. Hunter is so scared of how Belos is going to “replace” him that he is just prepared to give up and die right now to save the emperor the trouble. This whole scene is beautifully poetic. We’re expecting to see Amity walk in on this beautiful, blue, thriving lake. This blood, this life-sustaining substance, this powerful ingredient in a shimmering pool. Instead, she lowers her map to reveal a dry, empty pit, with the doomed clone of a dead man kneeling there, digging his own grave.

And that shot! (The one on the left). I fucking love the composition of that shot. You’ve got this pit surrounded by bare trees, and dead-centre, perfectly symmetrical is this boy with his back turned, on his knees, doing something we can’t quite make out. There’s this beam of almost-heavenly light coming down directly on top of him. But the light is blue and cold, and the colour palette around him is muted greens and blues. Not vibrant and lively, like plants and water- cold, deep, mythical, almost lovecraftian colours. It’s also the same colour palette as Belos in his goopy form, with the dark green skin and glowing blue eyes.

And the fact that they’re in a vein, looking for blood. The fact that the blood is gone, which typically connotes being pretty dead-looking. The fact that they’re deep into the earth. All of it is just so much imagery of death and tragedy.

Not only the writing, not only the characters, but the visual storytelling of this show is so fucking beautiful. That screenshot on the left is art. I need to see it oil painted and hung on the wall.

When I first watched toh I remember guessing that the mysterious Philip Wittebane was Belos simply on instinct. Every new clue about him I'd say out loud to myself "It's Belos. I don't know why I think so, but who else's identity would be an incredible twist?"

It's really fun looking for foreshadowing in hindsight... especially Belos' face reveal in Eclipse Lake and also... another Philip diary entry.

so, i posted the wip of this drawing on my normal blog but a buddy told me to make a new blog for my art!! so i did, and this is the finished eclipse lake drawing!!!!!
