i know that tumblr is the hating economics website, but if there are any economists or autistic people who like economics on here, please answer a question for me
so as we know there are 4 general market structures, monopoly, oligopoly, (im)perfect competition, and monopolistic competition
so what the hell is this kind of market?
- products are mostly identical with some mostly insignificant differences in quality. the products all basically look the same and follow the same standards for quality. there are some variants with small differences but they are by and large the same, and these differences don't explain the price and firms don't specialize in a particular variant
- there are probably several hundred mostly independent firms selling in this fairly small market, and while some are more popular, they mostly have fairly small market shares
- however, prices are all over the place. ranging from $550 (or under if you buy from a more sketchy firm, but i know this number off the top of my head because i fairly recently had to buy a product and looked very hard for the lowest price) to over $3000 based on extremely tiny differences in quality and sometimes the price difference between 100% identical products is over $150
what the hell is this market structure called? also, i feel like this market violates several laws of economics by existing, and i cannot for the life of me figure out why that is. i asked my mom who was an economist and she said "maybe the sellers aren't good at economics" but even a toddler with zero exposure to econ could tell you that severely over or undercharging for no discernible reason is generally not a good idea. and this WHOLE MARKET is like this.
last three days have been so much less productive than the three before them. classes ruin everything fr, had a test today it was okayish. need to start going to the reading room early cuz all the good seats get taken by 11am. boyf streamed the test match on gmeet cuz college wifi blocks all streaming sites while i read the newspaper. today was theek thaak.
are you supposed to have “intro” posts?
i am some guy who i guess you can call gf (or uh jeff? lol) based on my randomly chosen username. i was a philosophy and law nerd who ended up studying mathy things in uni instead and now my life is in ruins.
follow for reblogged memes (i dont know how to use tumblr. are you allowed to reblog people’s stuff or is that a faux pas. can someone teach me how to use tumblr? also this parenthetical went way too long) and my struggles to keep myself going, tagged #my life
i guess you’re supposed to name things you like. in no particular order, i like(or liked at some pt):
things to think about: education, academic integrity, misinformation, economic policy, global security, international trade and development, race, gender, liberalism!
movies: lots of oscar noms, knives out 1 + 2, a24 films, various asian american film projects i support because they are my brethren
tv: house md (i liked it before it was cool and that makes me cool yadayada), community, bojack horseman. saw spto recently too.
anime: not a frequent viewer but have deep nostalgia for detective conan/magic kaito, liked haikyuu when i binged it during the panini

11.17.21 | Quick update whilst I grind in one of the campus libraries. Currently trying to get my shit together and aggregate + summarize data for this research paper while also having an existential crisis about whether or not I even want to do this in the future. Love that for me
15/2/22
Long weekend, got more group projects, more personal projects, and more work 😩. Everyday I realise more and more maybe... Just maybe I want to move to some cottage in the countryside and have pets and read books without worry.
Reading non fiction is such a pain when your degree is just pre-occupying your whole mental energy....
Idk about anyone else but time is just flowing weirdly after turning 20 💀 it's neither here nor there.... Help
studying w a view 🍳
2/3/22: Currently studying Economics of Health. Touched grass (literally) and I think my crops are watered and my skin is clear for a few days, at least.
Currently reading: A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
