“I’ve been trekking through the forest for 6 years, but there are still parts of this place completely undiscovered. Did you know that just 10 minutes into walking about, you’ll encounter over 50 species of flora and fauna? And oh, don’t even get me started on the wildlife. This one time I was about to take a picture of a mushroom growing on a fallen tree, and I heard a shuffling behind me. There was a wild boar looking straight at me and then at the mushroom. That was pretty amazing as far as human and animal communication goes. It wasn’t just the boars though; I’ve had interesting encounters with chameleons, slender lorises, venomous snakes and even butterflies. A Tailed Jay once led me to a lovely spot off the beaten path and I could have sworn that was his intention all along.”

Opinion: UBC scraps its successful eat-what-you-kill operating model

The Campus Sustainability Office has paid for itself through reduced operating costs, but returns on investment aren't high enough

There are a couple of ironies - not to mention at least one valuable lesson - in the University of B.C.'s 13-yearold first-hand experiment with the economics of sustainability. The lesson is that wellplanned sustainability policies pay, often handsomely. Since its inception in 1998 as the first of its kind in Canada, the UBC Campus Sustainability Office has paid all of its costs -its staff and overhead as well as the principal and interest on the tens of millions of dollars it has borrowed to fund efficiency upgrades -with money its projects have shaved off the university's operating costs. At its peak a couple of years ago, these savings amounted to more than $6 million a year...
