(let’s take another moment to remember how Ed/Riddler was like “[gloating] was always one of your least attractive qualities”. How to insult someone 101: Imply you have a list of their qualities you are attracted to, but pick one from towards the bottom to point out. No homo, y’all.)
What Shape Does your Pain take ?
GLASS CAGE
You feel disconnected from the world around you. You can see everything, everyone can see you, but you're not really there. No one can really communicate with you, can they? You're isolated, even when you're around people you're alone. You want desperately to be close to someone, but you're afraid of what will happen if you shatter your glass prison. You don't want to let someone in, you don't want to leave, and it's a constant battle of your own will. It's easier to be alone, where no one can hurt you... Isn't it?
Commentary: I think this is partially true. After his efforts in the GCPD to make friends, Ed decided that only a very few are worthy. Surely, he wants attention from almost everyone, but actual friendships? Only if he thinks someone is good enough for him. Even so, it is hard for him to actually open up to/let someone in, because he doesn’t know how and he is afraid that if they know the real him, along with his mental issues, they will leave. For that, along with certain personalities taking over, he puts that ‘cold exterior’ of his, although he is certainly the cold logician he thinks he is...

one of the reasons I love Hush -the comic book- is that SPOILER ALERT Ed is behind all of it. He manipulated and got so many villains to work for him, he created Hush and no one even made the connection right until the end...and basically because he gave it away? (this illustration? A+). And he brought the city to ruins in Zero, so...WE LOVE. look at me reading the comics Now don’t get me wrong, Ed is not the perfect criminal (his compulsion is certainly his greater weakness), but I think he is really really underestimated? (and so does he tbh). Had it not been for his compulsion for his clues/riddles and if he was more violent aka top priority, he’d be a top villain for sure. He is a genius, he has vast knowledge about a lot of things, he can build pretty much anything and he can manipulate people (he can’t understand emotions, but he can understand motivations). Plus, imo the fact that he is underestimated, is one of his advantages. Also most of the time he prefers committing small crimes (robberies, annoying bruce) and he doesn’t care about ruling or power, which also adds to his ‘underestimated’ thing. I, on the other hand, as a mun, am complete idiot so it is kinda difficult to portray that genius level, but...point is...if Ed wanted to, he could do some real damage to the city and its people, so...keep that in mind.
(I just started the show Harley Qu1nn and it’s amazing asjkhaks. I want a thread/verse with Ed trying to tell ya your boyfriend sucks. he really doesn’t like joker okay and other asshole boyfriends. even though he is an asshole himself)
(I’ve said it before, but I love how the writers kept saying that ed/os are just friends and of course added the ‘brothers’ line, and yet they made him one of the strongest and most romantic couples on the damn show. I mean they bonded over ‘love is a weakness’ and then they kept sacrificing things for each other, they fought but they came back together, the love riddles etc and then all the tropes like: the ‘stayed for you’ trope, the ‘going of the rails cause your bf left you’ trope, the ‘heart vs head’ trope, the ‘saved you and nursed you back to health’ trope akljda they were written as a romantic couple, fight me on this )
(okay but have you noticed how Ed thought the best of Oswald pre the Isabella incident, as if Oswald could never do anything wrong ever? He genuinely think that Oswald would win the elections without bribes because people loved him, Ed admired him, he couldn’t even think that Oswald would ever do anything to hurt him. And post Isabella he thought the worst of him, as if even his good actions were for a selfish, ill-founded reasons? Right after Isabella, in Ed’s eyes Oswald wasn’t even capable of loving anyone, he didn’t even think that Oswald could save his life after Ed got tortured for him because Oswald is selfish (and of course couldn’t possibly love him still), Os saved his life only to have Strange mess with his head etc.
I think with the show’s timeline, he stopped seeing Oswald like that when they started working together and fully and consciously accepted him for whom he really is when Os admitted he is not a good friend to Arthur.
In my timeline, it’s a bit earlier than that around 4x15 when Oswald saves him. He doesn’t fully trust him, yet but he is heading there.)
