eddie and shannon deserved to get divorced and be miserable about it. they deserved to be awkward coparents who could no longer use sex instead of talking. they deserved to learn how to communicate with each other while fighting it out. they deserved to find a middle ground where chris came first.

but instead shannon died, and they never got that chance to talk. even in the end, eddie told shannon to stop talking. he never let her say everything she needed to say.

eddie should have been a divorcee instead of a widower, but he isn't. instead, he is still haunted by the idealized shannon that lives in his head.

the thing also is, and people may disagree, whatever, i think shannon loved eddie and asking for a divorce doesn't negate that. i legitimately think she felt overwhelmed and could only focus on one thing at a time and, just like eddie, chris was her priority. she couldn't focus on being a wife and a mother. she wanted to make figuring out how to be a good mother to her kid the biggest priority in her life, and she couldn't do that if she was also constantly fighting with eddie and being caught in the push and pull that was going on between them. her choosing to ask eddie for a divorce was her way of prioritizing their son, and i do ultimately think eddie would have understood that if they'd really had a chance to move on and grow with each other, rather than shannon getting killed.

i just think shannon living would have ultimately told a much more interesting story. do i think that eddieshannon would have been the Ultimate Endgame? No, probably not, and I wouldn't have really wanted that for them, but I do think they could have learned how to parent chris together and forgive each other for the things they both did while trying to deal with everything they both were dealing with. there's a very long shannon lives au in my head that maybe i'll word vomit onto paper some day.

Something really beautifully tragic about comphet Eddie Diaz, who tacitly knows that, beyond Christopher, Shannon and Buck are the two great loves of his life, but has worked so hard and so long that’s he’s successfully convinced himself that Shannon is his great romance and Buck is his greatest friendship when it’s really, truthfully, in the darkest corner of his soul, the other way around
