He stood up almost immediately and ran out of the room to catch Tonks before she leaves.
“Sorry, mate.” Tonks said before he had a chance to say anything. “I know there’s a call, but I have to be somewhere else.”
“It’s-“
“Nope, I’m off the clock. We’ll talk tomorrow-“
“Listen.” He blocked her way, shooting her an extremely serious look. “The address – it’s Luna’s parents’ house.”
Tonks froze and stared at him for a few seconds, before her mind caught up to the severity of the situation. “You mean-?”
“Her father, probably.”
“Oh, no.” Tonks murmured. “Let’s go.”
They didn’t even try to follow procedure, they just left as fast as possible. Three seconds have past before they stood in front of the house. The front door was open and the Dark Mark was floating in the sky a few meters above the roof.
A high-pitched cry cut through the air, followed by loud sobbing. They didn’t wait any longer and went inside, passed through the long corridor and into the large living room. Luna was sitting on the floor in the middle of the room, cradling the body of her little sister. Another loud cry burst out of her throat, so intense that it cracked mid-way through and turned into choked shrieks. She wasn’t aware of their presence yet.
Tonks turned to look at the body of the old man that was on the ground half a meter from Luna – it was her father. She and Talbott exchanged looks and without saying a word, managed to have an understanding on how to handle the situation.
With slow steps, Talbott headed toward Luna. He lowered himself to her level; his bent knees supported his weight, as he said with a soft voice- “Luna.”
She jumped away from him, not letting go of her little sister and shoved her wand in front of his face. After a moment of hesitation, she realized who she’s looking at and lowered her wand. Her dirty tears were mixed with make-up and smeared on her cheeks. An expression of complete horror filled her face.
“What happened?” he asked with the same soft voice.
Luna turned to look at Tonks that examined her father’s body and then back at Talbott. She struggled to speak without tears making her choke up, but after a few second of breathing, she said in a trembling voice- “Death Eater. Used the killing curse on them. According to…” her breaths became heavier.
Talbott gently patted her shoulder, whispering- “Take your time.” It helped calm her down enough to keep going.
“According to the state… the state of the bodies…” she wiped out the new tears that emerged from her eyes. “It happened about four hours ago, at least.” She closed her eyes and tightened her grip on her little sister. “The Death Eater left a… a…”
“This.” Tonks said and raised a sheet of paper for Talbott to see. “But I don’t think it was intentional, because it looks like some sort of code.”
Luna’s expression turned from horrified to enraged.
“It’s because of me.” She whispered in an accusatory tone.
“Luna-“ Tonks started to say, but Luna cut her off immediately.
“I don’t want to hear anything from you!” Luna roared. “It’s your fault – THE ORDER’S FAULT!”
“No, it’s-“
“What? A coincidence?!” Luna said furiously. “They knew I help you! That’s why they killed her!”
Tonks looked helpless. Tears starting to fill her eyes as well, but she managed to get a hold of her emotions in time. “No, Luna-“
“SHUT UP!” Luna screamed at her from the top of her lungs and Tonks fell silence.
“Maybe you should get that paper to evidence.” Talbott said calmly, his voice was firm but still compassionate.
Tonks seemed like she didn’t want to leave, but after a few more seconds of silence, nodded her head and apparated.
Luna turned to look at Talbott, tears running down her cheeks again. “I did this.” She started trembling.
Talbott wrapped his arms around her and pulled her closer. “I know how you feel right now.” She was about to say something, but he repeated- “I know.” Their eyes met and were locked in a gaze that expressed the same guilt and pain. They both knew how it feels to lose their family to the Death Eaters.
Luna lowered her head, leaned on his shoulder and started sobbing again. It was a quite cry. A defeated cry.
After Luna managed to calm down again, Talbott asked- “Where are Jana and Lilia?”
“Gone.” Luna said quietly, unintentionally, because she lost a significant amount of her vocal abilities by exhausting her vocal chords. “Not in the house, but all of their belongings are still here.”
“We’ll find them.” Talbott said. “Alive.” He added when he saw the helpless look on her face.
She shook her head. “They’re dead, I know it.”
“No, they’re not.” He insisted. “I will do everything I can, I swear.”
Luna kept shaking her head, but didn’t say anything else. She knew that Talbott is patiently waiting for her to get over the initial shock, so he could bring a unit to examine the crime scene.
“You can’t be on this case.” She said suddenly. “If the moles knew you’re here-“
“Do you really think Death Eaters haven’t came after me already?” he said with a bitter smile. “Trust me, I’ll be fine.”
“If you die in this house too-“
“No one else is going to die.” He reassured her, gently smearing the fresh tears off her cheeks. “We won’t let them get away with it.”
“No,” Luna shook her head and slowly pulled away from him, still holding onto Olivia’s body. “No, it’s my fault. You will die, everyone will die-!”
“Luna.” He said with a firm voice, but the hysteria got the better of her.
“They know. They’re watching me. I have to disappear. That’s the only way.”
“They were after your father regardless.”
“But Olivia!” She whisper-screamed in panic. “They killed her to send a message!”
“We don’t know that yet-“
“I have to go. You have to go!”
He never saw her like this. Even in the worst situations, Luna was always able to keep a calm appearance and stay levelheaded. Losing her entire family in one day was a shock too extreme to handle, even for someone as strong as her.
She quickly pushed herself to her feet, still hanging onto her dead sister, holding her in her arms like an overgrown child. Talbott followed her, but tried to keep a small distance so not to startle her.
“Funeral.” She murmured. “We have to do it quickly.”
“Luna, let’s put Olivia on the couch for a moment-“
Luna turned her back at him and started to walk from the point she was standing to the nearest wall and back.
“We can’t have it out in the open, it has to remain a secret. There’s a muggle-church nearby-“
“Luna, give me Olivia.” Talbott said and tried to remain calm, even though he started to feel the burden of her pain too. Seeing his closest friend in this condition was heartbreaking.
She ignored him. “I… I have a phone. I can call them. I need to find a spot where the magic won’t block the signal.”
“Stop for a second.” He reached out to her, but she dodged his touch.
“Maybe cremation would be the best option-“
“Luna, stop!” he snapped and grabbed her by the wrist. She looked like she’s just woke up from a dream.
“I… I…” she wasn’t able to finish the sentence.
“I know.” He said and very slowly and gently put his arms around Olivia and pulled her from her big sister’s grasp. He laid her down on the couch and got back to Luna, that buried her face in her palms.
“I’ll help with the funeral, we’ll do it as quickly as you want, but first I have to-“
“Yes.” Luna interrupted, lowering her hands and turn to look straight at him. Her gaze was almost soulless. “You need to examine the bodies.”
“I know you probably want to do it yourself, but you’re not in the right state of mind right now.” He pulled her into another embrace. “If we want to catch these fuckers, we have to do it right.”
Luna sighed loudly and wrapped her arms around his torso.
“Fine, I understand.” She said in a monotone voice. “But I’m not leaving them.”
“There’s no need for that.” He said. “You can stay here the whole time, and I’ll be here too. I promise.”
With another long sigh coming out of her mouth, Talbott knew he got through to her.

I know it’s a bit cliche to say that you can split Luna’s life in two - before she lost her family and after she lost her family, but it also very realistic, since a trauma at this scale can change anyone forever.
She was never the same, especially because she lost Olivia as well - the only person she believed could live a happy and normal life out of her entire family.
Also, I know Jacob is absent, it’s because right now he has two potential paths that I haven’t decided on yet - the first where he dies and the second where he survives... You can call him Schrödinger's cat until I pick one. Either way, he wasn’t there when she found the bodies or had the funeral, so in any case he’s irrelevant.
I wrote a bit more about the situation, but I’ll save it for another post!
For those who read the whole thing - I hope you liked it!
This is not part of the headcanon. It’s simply a dialogue that Luna and Jacob would have had if they actually talked about their problems instead of sweeping everything under the rug.
They have so many unresolved issues, that I thought it would be an interesting concept to explore. It got intense.
Luna: Aren’t you tired of playing the victim when you’re clearly at fault here?
Jacob: Right, I forgot I was talking to father’s mindless lacky.
Luna: I am not his lacky! Just because you have a warped perception-
Jacob: Accurate perception.
Luna: -of me, doesn’t mean that you know what the bloody hell you’re talking about!
Jacob: Won’t you ever shut up?!
Luna: You’re a failure! You have no one to blame but yourself-
Jacob: Yes, father.
Luna: -if you only did something with your life-
Jacob: Yes, father.
Luna: -instead of acting like a child.
Jacob: You’re right, father.
Luna: LIKE NOW! ACTING LIKE A CHILD!
Jacob: At least I can think for myself!
Luna: Oh, right. You’re so edgy. Hey everyone, look at me-!
Jacob: And I’m the child?
Luna: I wear leather and I smoke like a chimney! Aren’t I cool? Screw the man - literally!
Jacob: Is that supposed to be funny?
Luna: You are a self-centered prick that has nothing to offer and can only stand up against literal children and bully them!
Jacob: I was trying to prevent you from turning into HIM!
Luna: You were trying to kill me!
Jacob: Oh, please. Could you be any more mellowdramatic?
Luna: What about the time you used Bombarda on me?
Jacob: I was aiming for your toy.
Luna: You hit my god damn face!
Jacob: By accident!
Luna: I was 6, you psychopath!
Jacob: Were you already a mindless lacky at the age of 6? Impressive.
Luna: What about the time you destroyed my arm?!
Jacob: It was a tiny scratch-
Luna: It took the healers 6 mouths to fully reconstruct it!
Jacob: Fine, but I was a kid too!
Luna: Funny, when I was at that age, I haven’t completely obliterated any of Olivia’s limbs!
Jacob: Of course not, you were too busy climbing up father’s bum!
Luna: Father this, father that-
Jacob: Yes, father this, father that! He’s the real monster, if you’re looking to blame anyone.
Luna: You think I don’t know how he’s like?
Jacob: Oh, please.
Luna: Because I do-
Jacob: OH, PLEASE!
Luna: I know more than you think, you just never gave me enough credit. You never had even the slightest respect for me!
Jacob: What is there to respect? You were a mini version of him!
Luna: I was a child!
Jacob: You were a little devil.
Luna: I WAS A CHILD!!
Jacob: You can yell it all you want, still doesn’t change the fact that you were a nasty little twat.
Luna: Oh, me? Really? Was I the one that constantly pranked you?
Jacob: You were asking to be pranked, with that stupid face of yours.
Luna: Was I the one that constantly belittling you?
Jacob: It was a matter of time and you know it.
Luna: No, it wasn’t.
Jacob: It was. I knew he’ll get inside your head eventually and turn you against me, so what was the point in even trying? I had no chance, you adored him!
Luna: I have my issues with him, just as much as you do.
Jacob: Yeah, right.
Luna: What the hell would you know?!
Jacob: Aren’t you still in that cozy closet of yours? I know mum knows, she always knew, but does he know?
Luna: ...
Jacob: Right. So you haven’t told him - what a shocker!
Luna: Why the hell would I tell him?
Jacob: Because that’s who you are! You want to know how he reacted when I told him?
Luna: You should’ve kept it to yourself.
Jacob: How can you, of all people, say that?
Luna: He’s old and set in his ways. What’s the point in antagonizing him?
Jacob: You’re right, how dare I find men attractive?
Luna: That’s not what I meant and you know it.
Jacob: All I know is that you’re a little coward. Afraid to ruin your reputation as his perfect little princess?
Luna: He is old! What good would it make?!
Jacob: Don’t you want to be yourself?
Luna: I don’t need to! Not in front of him.
Jacob: Wow, so rebellious.
Luna: You told him because you knew it would push him over the edge!
Jacob: Ha! Oh, really? Was that the reason? Good to know!
Luna: He already had his problems with you-
Jacob: Exactly. EXACTLY! Do you have any idea how it feels that my own father hates me?! My own father thinks I’m a bloody mistake!
Luna: And instead of proving him otherwise-
Jacob: There was no way to prove anything! That horrible man made my life miserable ever since I can remember!
Luna: Look at that, just like you did to me.
Jacob: I was trying to help you!
Luna: You were taking your frustration on me! I was your bloody scapegoat, since you couldn’t confront father, and you know it!
Jacob: You are so blind!
Luna: No, you’re just a hypocrite!
Jacob: Fine, I’m a hypocrite! But it doesn’t mean that man gets a free pass for all the crap he put me through!
Luna: He had a messed up family too-
Jacob: Don’t you even try-
Luna: -they were literally Death Eaters!
Jacob: -to compare the situations. He married mum out of spite! He brought us to this world out of SPITE!
Luna: They messed him up-
Jacob: That doesn’t justify his actions!
Luna: -really bad and you know it.
Jacob: He messed me up!
Luna: Yeah, well. Me too. That doesn’t mean I’m crying about it like a freaking infant!
Jacob: YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THIS MAN DID TO ME!
Luna: Yeah, made you feel worthless. Boo-fucking-hoo. Join the club.
Jacob: Really? Did he ever beat you up?
Luna: Of course not.
Jacob: Did he ever screwed up your face so badly that mum had to literally reconstruct it?!
Luna: I know that he’s not a good man, but he wouldn’t resort to violence.
Jacob: When he found out I’m gay, he used the CRUCIATUS curse on me!
Luna: ...
Jacob: Do you have any idea what it’s like being tortured by your own father?!
Luna: ...
Jacob: Nothing to say, all of a sudden?
Luna: You’re a liar.
Jacob: Oh, am I?
Luna: Yes, you are clearly lying.
Jacob: Of course you’ll say that, you worthless arse.
Luna: You must be really desperate-
Jacob: Why would I lie about it?!
Luna: -to create such fake- BECAUSE YOU’RE A LIAR!
Jacob: ASK HIM! Ask mum. Let’s see what they’ll say.
Luna: Fuck you.
Jacob: And if you ever come out to him, that’s exactly what’s expecting you. You’re welcome, by the way. I had no one to give me a heads-up.
Luna: Shut up! I don’t need to hear these kinds of lies for the psychopath that was probably a few pranks away from using the same curse on me!
Jacob: I would never-!
Luna: You are the only one that ever physically hurt me in our family.
Jacob: ...
Luna: How dare you pass the blame to him, after everything you’ve done.
Jacob: I... I never intended to hurt you, honestly. You were just so much alike! With your stupid smirk and insufferable voice-
Luna: I was helpless.
Jacob: Well, so was I.
Luna: I don’t care. You are the older sibling, you should have known better.
Jacob: ...
Luna: You don’t deserve any sympathy. None!
Jacob: I care about you and that’s more than that horrible excuse of a father would ever give you. He is incapable of real love and you know it.
Luna: ...
Jacob: There is no such thing as unconditional love with that man.
Luna: I don’t need unconditional love. Never have.
Jacob: He is a bad man.
Luna: I know. You’re both bad-
Jacob: He’s worst!
Luna: I know.
Jacob: No, you don’t. If you don’t believe me, then you don’t know.
Luna: Nothing would convince me that you’re telling the truth now.
Jacob: Then ask him.
Luna: I will, but I already know that you’re lying.
Some cuts are just too deep to mend. I can’t think of any scenario that could ever truly repair their damaged relationship. That’s why they chose to just ignore the past and act as if nothing happened, while letting all the passive-aggressive remarks slip through the cracks.
This post is long enough, but if you’re interested, I’ll add the part where she asks their father about Jacob’s allegations.
Edgar: As you can see, I am very busy. Is it urgent?
Luna; I just have one question.
Edger: All right, go ahead.
Luna: Have...have you ever…?
Edgar: Speak, child. I have no time for hesitancy.
Luna: Have you ever used the Cruciatus curse on him? Jacob, I mean.
Edgar …
Luna: …
Edgar: No.
Luna: Okay…
Edgar: Anything else?
Luna: No, that's all.
*She turned to leave*
Edgar: Luna.
Luna: Yes, father?
Edgar: You have great potential and your OWLs prove it. Do not let him take you down with him. He is below your level in any regard and he knows it. That is why he dragged you into the these vaults nonsense and that is why he is planting these ridiculous ideas inside your head.
Luna: Yes, father.
--
Rowan: So, what happened?
Luna: He did it.
Rowan: Oh, Luna, I’m... I’m so sorry-
Luna: I don’t want to talk about it.
--
Jacob: So, have you asked father yet?
Luna: ...
Jacob: Didn’t like what you’ve heard?
Luna: Of course I haven’t asked him, you’re obviously lying!
Okay, I’m just going to say it - Luna’s father and my version of Jacob are both deeply flawed and although they have redeeming qualities, they both did terrible things in the past.
BUT!
@kyril-hphm - Kalev makes my Jacob look like a good bloke.
@aleksia-aries-hogwartsmystery - Markus makes Edgar (Luna’s father) look like the father of the year.
Also, I love both your headcanons so much and I’m super invested in all of your characters 😅 (So keep doing what you’re doing, ‘cause it’s obviously working.)
After drawing Jacob and Olivia, I wanted to draw Luna’s parents next and maybe add a bit of my headcanon.
Her father - Edgar Hendrik Silver:
Pure-blood.
Was born in England to an English father and a German mother.
In Hogwarts he was in Slytherin. He was also a Prefect and the Head-Boy.
After graduating, he went to work in the Ministry of Magic in the Department of Mysteries.
Because he married Jana (which is a Half-blood), his family disowned him.
He met Jana when he was 42 and she was 17, fresh out of Hogwarts. They got married a couple of months later and after less than a year of marriage, they brought their elder son - Jacob.
When Voldemort rose to power – he was almost killed several times by people he considered friends from Hogwarts or other pure-bloods – to the point that he had to hide for almost a year until Voldemort’s Regime came to an end.
He is a very cold and calculated man, and had a very toxic relationship with Jacob.
Her mother - Jana (Yana) Alička Silver:
Half blood.
Was born to an English father (pure-blood) and a Czech mother (muggle).
She is very proud of her muggle roots and interested in muggle culture in general, which made Luna interested in this too.
In Hogwarts she was in Hufflepuff and after graduating, she started working as a kindergarten teacher.
Edgar wanted her to be a housewife and after she got pregnant with Luna, she quit her job so she could take care of their children.
She used to be a very warm person, but after years of being in an unhappy marriage, she became more self-centered and generally very childish.
Their relationship:
Since the beginning, their relationship was unstable. Their age difference was frowned upon by both families. After Edgar’s family found out Jana’s mother is a muggle, they gave him an ultimatum - break up with her or they’ll disown him. He chose to propose to her instead. Even though it was his choice, he resents Jana for his family’s disapproval.
During their marriage, he cheated on her constantly and it was sort of an open secret. Jacob, that was very close to his mother, tried to make her leave him.
Edger was very annoyed by her up-beat (and childish) personality and the coupled rarely spent time together alone.
After years of neglect, she was about to leave him, but after Jacob’s disappearance she changed her mind.
Their relationships with their children:
Edgar and Jacob - very toxic and problematic. Edgar was the hardest on Jacob, never showed him any kind of love or affection and constantly reminded Jacob that he’s a disappointment. Jacob hated his father and once he started going to Hogwarts, he barely came back home to visit, because he wanted to avoid his father as much as possible.
Edgar and Luna - their relationship is complicated. Although he was always very distant, he did show her the encouragement that Jacob never got. He saw a lot of potential in her and believed that she would become a great witch someday. However, he was always overly-critical of her, especially when she got fooled by Jacob’s pranks. Luna resented the fact that he never tried to help her and always criticized her, but also wanted to prove to him that she can make him proud.
Edgar and Olivia - Olivia has the most convenient personality and in contrast to her older siblings, never resented her father for being cold and distant. They had a very good relationship. Moreover, because Olivia barely got to know Jacob, she believed that he is the only one to blame for Luna’s emotional issues.
Edgar and Lilia - their relationship wasn’t long-lasting, and was average and not out of the ordinary.
Jana and Jacob - they were very close and had a great relationship. Jana always stuck by his side, even when he was bullying Luna. Jacob tried to make her leave his father for years, because he hated the way he’s treating her.
Jana and Luna - even though Jana always showed love and warmth toward her daughter, they still had a complex relationship. Luna hated the fact that her mother always made excused for Jacob’s behavior and she also resented how weak she was for not leaving her cheating husband. Because Jana is very childish, it was hard for Luna to respect her.
Jana and Olivia - their relationship wasn’t great, because Olivia took her father side on everything. Olivia thought that Jana is acting like a child and used it as an excuse for her father’s cheating.
Jana and Lilia - they were the closest (after Jana and Jacob), and after the events of the second wizarding war, Jana took Lilia with her to the US, where she started a new family with a new husband. Lilia was the only one from her old family that stayed with her.
Bonus:
A drawing of Edgar when he was in his 7th year at Hogwarts:
Nov. 11, 2014–For well over half a century, Edgar P. Silver was the “unsung hero” of Maryland politics. Few in the public knew the name, but the politicos sure did.
Edgar P. Silver
consigliere to elected leaders. Trusted adviser to politicians — left, right and center. A judge’s judge. A friend to the end.
Known simply as “The Judge” to his legion of acquaintances, Silver, died…
