Jo Hollingsworth ❋ Small Hours ↳ jo + anthony moodboard
Dear Josephine,
I know that my actions at the Trowbridge Ball were untoward and that you have asked me not to attempt it again or mention it to anyone. I will respect your wishes but must first make this one confession, and I hope it finds you well.
When we met, I had no intention or desire for love. I did not want it, nor did I believe I needed it, but you are all I have been able to think about in the months since we met. Every time I see daffodils at the florist, I think of you in your estate gardens in Wales. Whenever I catch a whiff of saltwater, my thoughts turn to you because you smell like the sea. Every night I dream of you.
When I convinced Matthew not to accept Lord Branning's marriage proposal, it was not for entirely unselfish reasons. I was jealous because he had done what I could not, which was to ask you to be mine. So, I sabotaged your chance with Lord Branning and justified it to myself with the fact that you had expressed no interest in the match. It was done in good faith, but I should not have done it regardless. You are more than capable of making decisions for yourself.
I love you, Jo. I will keep my distance as you asked of me, but I could not do so without telling you that simple fact. I hope you will not resent me for this, for I could not bear it. If nothing else, I hope we may remain friends.
Always yours,
Anthony.
