I was rereading my Baccano! fic Newfound Normal recently, and in doing so was reminded of how great Edith is. She’s often overlooked when it comes to celebrating Baccano!’s women or even characters in genera, l, which is a shame since she’s this brave and proactive working woman who steps up to the plate when her boyfriend cannot.
Seriously, this woman risks the anger of two mafia families for Roy’s sake: the Gandors, who while small for a Family are her employers and thus have huge influence over her livelihood life; and the Runoratas, one of the most influential/powerful mafia syndicates not just in the state of New York but along the entire East coast.
She risks her job and her life for the sake of a man who has failed both himself and her in so many ways, a man whom she refuses to give up on -- trying to save him from himself as best she can, through one hard time after another.
That Edith is incredibly proactive as a character works well within the context of Volume 4 specifically, since her proactiveness is a sort of...control against which we can compare Eve and Roy’s own internal struggles. Eve, in that Eve recognizes her own passivity and struggles with it (she cries, she prays - but even if she believes in prayer, is praying really all she can do?) but does eventually decide to take matters into her own hands...
...And then you’ve got Roy, whose own proactiveness is a response to Edith’s proactiveness. She makes him better as a person.
I dunno, I just feel like Edith Appreciation is a thing that needs to happen more often in this fandom.
