Ed and Jeanine were able to stay bestfriends for so long despite the distance between them because they're both the type of people who are kind of passive in relationships, Ed because he thinks it's the best way to ensure his actions take the other people's feelings into account and Jeanine because she looks for signs and fate in most of her relationships and can forget there's other parts to it than that. This is also why they've known eachother since birth and didn't admit their feelings for eachother until they were sixty.
