Brazil is bracing for a right-wing insurrection far worse than the 2021 US Capitol attack

Post-2020 US elections, right-wing groups stormed the Capitol. As we approach the 2022 elections, Brazil is bracing for something worse.

The president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Minister Edson Fachin, declared that during this year’s presidential election, Brazil may have a more serious attack than the January 6, 2021, invasion of the Capitol in the United States.

“We may have an even more aggressive episode than January 6 from here on Capitol Hill. We understand that there are six fundamental conditions to prevent this from happening in Brazil,” said Fachin, during a discussion at the Wilson Center in Washington DC on Wednesday, July 6.

“If there is a dissolution of one of the branches of government, the danger could go to the other side of the street,” he said. “Brazilian society, on October 2, will hold up a mirror to itself. Whether it longs for the war of everyone against everyone, or it longs for democracy and, from there, make its choices in a free and conscious way.”

Brazil could face attack like U.S. Capitol assault, top election official says

Brazil's elections chief on Tuesday warned that the South American country could face a similar assault as the 2021 U.S. Capitol riot amid growing attacks on its democratic institutions ahead of October's presidential election.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who is behind in the polls to his leftist rival Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, has repeatedly cast doubt on the country's electronic voting system, saying it is vulnerable to fraud, without providing evidence.

Critics fear that the far-right Bolsonaro, who idolizes former U.S. President Donald Trump, may refuse to accept the result if he loses, paving the way for a Jan. 6-style institutional breakdown in Latin America's biggest country.

Supreme Court Justice Edson Fachin, who heads Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE), said during a speech in Brasilia that the anti-democratic "regression" witnessed in other countries has already "infiltrated" Brazil.

Brazil Supreme Court Judge Annuls Lula’s Carwash Convictions

Brazil Supreme Court Justice Edson Fachin annulled former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s convictions in the Carwash corruption investigation, clearing the way for the leftist leader to run for the nation’s top job.

The federal court in the southern city of Curitiba had no jurisdiction over the case, Fachin wrote in a statement on Monday, saying that cases against Lula must be tried in court in the capital, Brasilia.

The decision “puts ex-President Lula in position to run in 2022 elections,” XP political analysts wrote in a note.

Brazilian markets tanked to the lowest levels of the day following reports of the news in local media. The real fell as much as 1.6% while stocks declined as much as 3.4%.
