I pass this particular episode along, not as it is an important event in the siege of Charleston, but as a good demonstration of how different first-hand accounts work in conjunction for the historian.

In his journal for June 25, 1864, Major Edward Manigault, in charge of the South Carolina siege train artillery and a portion of the James Island defenses, described at length some Federal activity…

In yesterday’s post, I cited Federal orders for demonstrations in front of James Island.  The purpose of these operations was to draw Confederate forces to Charleston.  Brigadier-General Alexander Schimmelfennig ordered four specific actions – I wouldn’t say columns – to demonstrate as if the Federals intended to press on the Confederate picket lines, and possibly move onto James Island itself.

For his journal entry on April 15, 1864, Major Edward Manigault noted an uncommon, though not too unusual, weapon employed by the Federals:

At about 5 P.M. a Yankee Gunboat came up the Stono and Commenced Shelling our advanced Pickets about Legare’s Overseer’s House. At the same time a number of Hale’s War Rockets were thrown from Dickson’s [Dixon's] Island at the Stations occupied by the pickets…
