Edward Niles #4
I had a heavy one last night. I got through more of my absinthe supply. I can still taste it in my throat. My head is splitting. My nose bleeds are getting worse. The taste of iron was what woke me up. I found myself in the larder face down in some cheese and crackers. I was clutching a leg of fresh ham, which I do not remember buying.
I received a letter from the lawyer of one of my estranged relatives. My Uncle Solomon has died and he has left me a small something in his will. I am to travel to London on Friday to collect it. Of all my family Solomon is the only one who rarely talks to me. Since father was hanged for murdering mother my family rarely speaks to me. They think I'm a bastard child anyway, so why would they associate themselves with a boy who may not be as "pure blooded" as they are. Solomon was an eccentric old fellow and didn't pay much attention to what the others said. I lived with him during my education but when his alzheimer's got worse I rarely heard from him. It was sad news but I had accepted his fate long ago.
All she does is stare. I moved her into a better room. I say better. There is less shit on the floor. An orderly stayed with me, she is being watched more carefully, last night she throttled a nurse who came in to stop her screaming. I rarely work nights so I wasn't there to help. She seems calmer around me. I swear she winked at me this morning when I tried for the hundredth time to get her to speak. I know she did, but then she went back to just staring at the wall.
Damn I'm thirsty.

Thursday October 9th 1851 Battery-On-Sea Institute For The Mentally Insane.
Patient Profile: Patient Number 13
Name: Unknown
Gender: Female
Age: 20?
Description: Around five, five and a half feet. Light Blue eyes. Reddish brown hair. Small curvy figure.
The patient was found alone on the beach after Monday nights storm by some local fisherman, wearing nothing but a blue party frock. She was screaming and wailing at the ocean. When apprehended by the police who bought her here, she attacked them and almost blinded a young constable. After fighting like a cat she was wrestled into submission and bought to this institute. She had no identification and will not tell anyone her name, let alone speak. She has no distinguishing features that may help us find any relatives and looks to be of Germanic heritage. She does not match the description of any missing person records and has not been identified as any one of importance. She seems childlike and content most of the time but will spontaneously burst into fits of hysterical rage. No diagnosis had yet been made.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Off the record: She is kept in a tiny hovel of a room, where she sits and weeps. She is hardly fed and she has already received two black eyes. It makes me sick. She is MY patient and I will not tolerate this treatment!

I woke up this morning with the worst headache I've had in years. I tried to finish the loaf of bread in my larder but eating around the mould turned my stomach more than the excessive alcohol intake.
After I managed to dress myself. I staggered up the coastal path towards the Asylum. The walk gets harder and harder everyday. Shadow you were a good horse. When I arrived I found myself being marched into the wardens office. He looked more greasy and sweaty than ever, licking his lips as he does every few seconds as he does. He assigned me Patient 13, the girl from yesterday. As I left his office he commented on her figure, he was derogatory in a sexual way and the muscles in my right arm twitched and tensed.
