love is not an abundant currency in rosemary’s life. her parents rarely exchanged such affections, be it between themselves or to their daughter, and she’s prided herself on surviving mostly without. she saw others drowning in romance, quietly admired it, but boldly declared that simply isn’t for her.

and then she meets him —- a breath of fresh air, exhilarating and charming, the first and possibly only relationship that allowed her to feel both adored and liberated. he didn’t shy away from his affections, and he provoked the same warmth from her.

their bodies collide in the slick summer night, intertwined in sheets while pure pleasure surges through her nerve endings. nails dig into fresh canvas of his broad back, teeth nipping at the curve of his jaw —– euphoria erodes through her, and when her wild gaze finds his own through the dim light, all sense & logic escapes her, the only words capable of falling out are the most damning: “ i love you. ”

the admission typically strikes fear, but in this moment, fondness blossoms in her chest and radiates from every pore. “ i love you, ” she repeats bravely, though her cadence is low, solely for humberto, “ and i always will. ”
