Critical freewriting asks writers to think more analytically about a topic or subject for writing

When going through the prewriting process, not only is freewriting an effective approach towards generating ideas, but critical freewriting is an effective approach as well. As opposed to freewriting, during critical freewriting, one is encouraged to ask questions, respond to the questions, as well as engage in opposing views. Using reflection and inquiry, critical freewriting allows a writer to gain a better grasp on their topic, as well as develop multiple outlooks on a topic.

Freewriting is an effective prewriting strategy that allows you to explore an idea without worrying about grammar errors or coherence. This form of writing is not about devel- oping a finished product or performing “good writing.”

Often, when an individual begins the process of writing an essay or research paper, one finds themselves to in a state where their  mental block,. To the writer, this may pose as an issue, especially when there’s a deadline in effect. To prevent this from hapenning, writers ‘use a prewriting technique known as freewriting. In the freewriting process, a person writes continuously for a set period of time without regard to spelling, grammar, or topic. Through freewriting, one is able to increase their productivity, generate new ideas as well as creates a chain reaction of new thoughts.

In a students life, when faced with a reading assignment, one is inclined to read the work passively. Meaning, the student reads through the assignment, failing to re-read sections thus failing to identify key points in the text. While passive reading may prove as satisfactory for some, active reading provides a student with a more optimal way to succesfully completing a reading assignment. Characteristics of reading actively include:  asking oneself questions to uncover the purpose and meaning of the text, frequently noting the main points in one’s own words or in writing, as well as making connections between the readings and themes discussed in class.
