What Does 40 Days without Ego Look Like? 40 Day No Ego Fast…
Ok so I felt the need to share about a journey I embarked on this week. And hopefully if God willing I will continue to do so. So, my favorite Yoga Instructor Sherrell Moore invited her yoga tribe on a 40-day Global Surrender Fast with herself and Dr. Celeste Owens. And as I started doing the prep work last week, I had in my head what I was going to give up and it was social media and sweets. I felt this was great speaking that I was starting to look like a chick in her first trimester but with an empty womb, and to not waste a half an hour out of the day sitting on the “thinking chair” scrolling through the gram. But I had to be honest and say I had given these things up before for Lent and obviously I had relapsed and been on one ever since.
But I knew that where I was in life I needed more than what I was willing to give. So, I cannot tell you how I stumbled upon the idea of ego, but I knew that it was a sore spot for me, and to be straight up with you I had no idea how or what giving up Ego looked like. So, I turned to the one book that I knew went into depth about Ego, and it was A Course in Miracles. The crazy thing is my brother Jay gave me this book literally 7 years ago almost to the date. I started reading it and then put it down because I remember thinking this book is like one big riddle and I already think too much and this book would send me right over the edge. So, I picked it back up and started reading from where I left off which was Chapter 4, (yes chapter 4…don’t judge me) well Chapter 4 talks about the Illusions of the Ego. If you’ve already read the book…congratulations to you!
But if not, I do encourage you to read it, but just make sure you’re in a place in your life where you are able to receive and digest it. The just of this chapter was who God created you to be vs. who you created yourself to be. I knew I had stumbled on the right sacrifice because everything in that chapter was speaking to everything I was feeling and going through at the time. I recognized that my ego was the little voice inside my head that used fear, anxiety, and pride to govern my actions, and I felt this shade was becoming more of an eclipse in my life.
“Who but the insane would undertake to believe what is not true, and then protect this belief at the cost of the truth” (Schucman, H, (2007) A Course in Miracles 3rd Edition, The Foundation for Inner Peace)
Yeah that was my BOOM moment…lol! Just to give you an example of something I was going through at the time, ego tells us to hold on to dead relationships because to let go would be to lose…right? Wrong, number one you can’t lose what you never had and it’s never a loss when to be honest this it’s not what you want anyway. Ego says stay because this is all you have, spirit says let go and I’ll show you more.
Ego will never say I love you, I need you, I care about you, I appreciate you, I value you, I need help, I apologize, I was wrong, I don’t know, or just simply Thank You. Ego lacks transparency and realness. Ego keeps great business man and women from being great leaders. Ego can be in the driver’s seat when it comes to religion, just as much as it can be the thing that keeps you from having a relationship with God. So yeah, this 40-day journey that I am embarking on, trust me when I tell you is not easy. This wasn’t even my first choice as you can see. It’s a tough sale giving up this protective blanket that I to choose to carry around with me daily. It’s something that has been a part of me since I was able to understand human connection. But after a while you realize that maybe its guarding you from all that could be great in your life as oppose to all that is bad? So, for the next 40 days I am riding in the No Ego Zone. Letting go of less and making room for more…more of who I am, more of who God is and more of who I am to this world.
