I think probably contacts. I think he has a lot of kneejerk revulsion at the person he was when he first arrived at Oz, for reasons both pretty fair (he was the jackass who ran over a child and then tried to fight the charges and use his wealth and Harvard connections to avoid consequences, which then backfired spectacularly) and not fair to himself at all.

He smashed his glasses while coming down off a PCP high and then stubbornly refused to get new ones for (at least) the next five years; I don't think that sense of defensiveness just disappears, y'know? And yeah, the Doylist symbolism is both potent and extremely obvious, but the way he looks in glasses in-universe is also right there on the surface. He's the kid with no one to sit with in the cafeteria who gets his lunch money stolen and his books thrown in the mud. Better to have to squint while reading than look vulnerable like that ever again.

(I mean logically, he could've also just had contacts in Oz as well, but imo he's too stubborn for that.)
