Aurelia had been so engrossed by the medical lecture she had managed to sneak in to that the concept of time completely eluded her. If her mother knew what she was watching, the Dowager Duchess would absolutely lock her in her room and never allow her to step a foot outside the estate without her permission ever again but Aurelia was used to this routine now—having learned how to employ a decoy or make various excuses to escape her mother’s watchful eye.
A stethoscope. Just the idea of being able to listen to another person’s heartbeat well enough to distinguish medical anomalies was fantastical and Aurelia was so excited to see what discoveries would be made as a result of this newfound power humans obtained. The lecturer was just about to explain those potentials when the sun’s beams shined through the window at just the right angle to remind Aurelia that she needed to look at the time.
And when she did, Aurelia hightailed out of the lecture hall as quickly as she could. She was running late and knew she was going to be in a lot of trouble if she couldn’t come up with an excuse for her tardiness.
In her rush to get home and at the speed she was zooming through the streets, it was no surprise that she eventually found herself colliding into a body much smaller than her own, sending said body flying to the ground. Aurelia’s eyes widened in shock and she immediately knelt down in front of her victim. “My deepest apologies, Miss!” she squeaked, forgetting she was in disguise for a moment. She immediately cleared her throat and lowered her voice again, returning to the best imitation of a man she could manage. She held out her hand for the woman to take so that she could stand up. “I hope you are not injured.”
